Our Executive Director Gabe Angieri moderated a panel at INTERSECTION on “Why I Chose St. Louis to Start my Business.” Our esteemed panel of Arch Grants Founders included: - Candera T., Founder of Bask & Bloom Essentials - Shani Bennett, Co-Founder of Figozo - Angelica Harris, Founder of Top Tutors for Us - Timothy Luchini, Co-Founder of Intramotev Arch Grants champions the St. Louis area for startups. Why locate your business here? The takeaways from the discussion: Affordability - operating in the Midwest is a competitive advantage, almost a cheat code. Access to talent - students from Washington University in St. Louis and Saint Louis University and people with relevant corporate experience abound in #STL (example: Intramotev draws from WashU and Boeing) Capital can be trickier - at this point, high interest rates and a lack of liquidity is an issue across the board. Arch Grants can help make connections to capital. From the Midwest, companies can draw capital from St. Louis but also New York, Boston, San Francisco and elsewhere, and all those investors will talk about your business in their meetings and communities. So attracting capital can be hard work, but the process can generate positive word of mouth. The importance of preparation - be ready when your opportunity arises. If you’re referred to an investor, your preparation will reflect positively or negatively on you and the person who referred you to that investor. Tell a good story. Founders need to tell more authentic stories of both triumph and struggle. Tell the whole story and you’ll attract attention and fans. Be positive - St. Louis has so much going for it, and we need to present that fact often and create walking, talking ambassadors to further improve the narrative. Founders will go through adversity, even dark times. Take care of yourself and realize you’re not alone in facing challenges. Thanks to our panelists for the valuable discussion and INTERSECTION for the opportunity. #STL #ChampionTheBold #STLMade #MATI WashU In St. Louis For St. Louis
