Tyler Goldberg, director of political strategy at Assembly Global, recently spoke to Kendra Barnett at The Drum about the record breaking $12bn that is predicted to be spent on political advertising this cycle and its larger effect on the media market. The TL;DR: “there are all of these secondary and tertiary effects of having people watching $12bn worth of political ads,” Tyler explains. “So if you’re a commercial advertiser and you do not have a plan for analyzing how political [ad spend] is going to affect your Q3 and Q4, you’re not operating with the most information. That’s why it’s so important to work alongside folks who understand the political landscape.” But at Assembly, we understand that different brands, industries, and clients need individualized strategies to navigate this market. Assembly's Political Practice has seen how this growing investment in advertising has inevitably affected brands, even those not directly involved in political messaging. We've seen notable trends, including a growing emphasis on digital and programmatic advertising strategies. In the past couple of weeks, they've seen new trends in ad spend, especially around independent expenditure groups (IEs). What's the big deal with IEs? Well, though many of us haven't even heard about them, IEs can influence political advertising by spending large amounts of money on ads that support or attack candidates without direct coordination with their campaigns. These ads can then shape public perception and sway voters. While the regular viewer may not be able to identify who's behind which ads, knowing about the hidden messages and funding sources is important because it reveals potential biases, hidden agendas, and the extent of financial influence on the political process, which affects transparency and voter trust. 2024 spend is up over the 2020 election cycle, says Digiday. And Assembly's Political Practice has been keeping tabs on it too. Digiday reports that "before he canceled his re-election bid, President Biden’s campaign spent $150 million between January 2023 and April 2024 — and another $150 million between mid-April and July of this year alone." Tyler Goldberg, political strategy director at Assembly, highlighted that there this year's presidential nomination process had actually held back campaign spending on both sides. “The GOP presidential primary was faster and cheaper than we expected,” Tyler said. It’s unlikely the July news cycle has compensated for the uncontested primaries, and Tyler says that Assembly’s estimates for the entire electoral cycle (roughly $12 billion) remain unchanged.
