Senior Fellow Christy Adeola Braham, PhD's work with WIEGO - Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing supports grassroots worker organizations in the push for equitable access to healthcare and workplace health and safety provisions. As extreme heat waves become more frequent and intense, informal workers are forced to labor in hazardous conditions without adequate protection. In addition to local infrastructure investments and worker-driven initiatives, Christy is advocating for worker protections to be integrated into national climate policies and frameworks at the municipal, national, and international levels and be part of global coordinated action. 2024 Fellow Jasmine M. sheds light on the pressing issues faced by India’s indigenous communities in her BMJ Leader opinion piece. These communities endure higher rates of malnutrition, infectious diseases, and chronic illnesses, exacerbated by geographic isolation, discrimination, and limited access to healthcare. The 2018 Tribal Health Report highlighted these challenges and recommended creating Tribal Health Councils and targeted action plans. However, a lack of comprehensive health data continues to hinder efforts to address their specific needs. Jasmine emphasizes that to bridge these gaps, India must adopt culturally sensitive health policies and actively involve indigenous communities in health governance to ensure lasting change and equitable healthcare for all. 🔦Staff Spotlight: Toyese Oyeyemi Toyese Oyeyemi has been working with the Mullan Institute for 4 years and cuts across multiple initiatives. Among his roles, he serves as the Executive Director of the Social Mission Alliance, a Charter Committee member and Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity, and as a Lead Evaluator for the Health Equity Leaders Initiative fellowship here at the Mullan Institute. What a treat to hear Senior Fellow Adekemi Adeniyan speak about her work with and passion for children’s oral health equity in underserved rural communities. We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Yolanda Ogbolu has joined the Atlantic Fellows for Health Equity Charter Committee! Dr. Ogbolu, the University of Maryland School of Nursing Dean, brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to health equity to the committee. Her interprofessional and community-engaged research and scholarship have made significant strides in addressing health inequities locally and globally. In addition to her work in Maryland and her hometown of West Baltimore, her projects have enhanced nursing practices in low-resource communities in Nigeria, Rwanda and Liberia, and have tackled social determinants of health in marginalized communities. 🌟 Faculty Spotlight 🌟 Khadidiatou Ndiaye, PhD is our Health Equity Learning Lead, leading our current fellows’ health equity curriculum. Her work centers on culture, global health and behavior change communication. She is committed to fostering an inclusive approach to behavior change communication, ensuring equitable access to health information. She explores how culture impacts the fundamental understanding of health as well as individual, and communities’ risk and behaviors. Her work highlights the unique health experiences of Sub-Saharan African communities and their implications for not only understanding health risks, but also designing contextually appropriate interventions.

Senior Fellow Bertrand Moses continues to work towards improving the mental health of adolescents in the Caribbean. UNICEF Eastern Caribbean, in collaboration with UWI St. Augustine, the Ministry of Health, and the Child Development Centre in Jamaica, has launched Chatline, a mental mental health messaging service aimed at supporting adolescent mental health. Bertrand highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that 50% of mental health challenges begin by age 14. He emphasized the need for accessible mental health services to address issues like violence, climate change, and education that impact young people.
