“We bring more than just medical relief. We bring hope,” shares Calvin Harvel, peer support specialist at Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte. Atrium Health’s MED-1 mobile hospital has been deployed to Tryon, NC, in response to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene. Activated by the state, MED-1 is the receiving hospital to triage, treat and transfer patients, as needed. The MED-1 team is comprised of dedicated health care professionals—nurses, doctors, trauma surgeons, paramedics, IT specialists and support staff. Wendy Henson, nurse leader with MED-1, says, “If you can make a difference, it’s completely worth it.”

As we continue to witness the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene and the aftermath of the storm, our hearts are heavy for the loss of life and the devastated communities. We are keeping those impacted top of mind and have initiated support. Our mobile medicine teams have made dozens of trips to transport patients and deliver supplies – via our Atrium Health MedCenter Air and Wake Forest Baptist AirCare air ambulance teams, as well as with our ambulances on the ground. We expect our MED-1 mobile hospital to be deployed to provide much-needed medical services in the disaster area. Additionally, Atrium Health Georgia EMS is assisting with search and rescue missions, transporting patients and answering emergency calls. Our organization and our teammates are committed to providing immediate and long-term disaster response and recovery for our communities. Synovial Sarcoma can change someone's life in many ways. And while this is true for Ja’Ziyah, she still imitated hope and strength. In October of 2022, JaZiyah was diagnosed with Synovial Sacaroma. Even through adversity, the patient known to those close to her as Jazz continues to inspire many through the way that her spirit has danced in the face of adversity! She began chemotherapy treatment shortly after her diagnosis, with most of her care taking place at HOPE For Kids, part of Atrium Health Levine Children’s Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital. “Everyone here, they’re like family. They’ve just been amazing,” says Lynette, Ja’Ziyah’s mother. Ja’Ziyah went into complete remission in September 2023 prior to scans in February 2024 revealing the difficult news that her cancer had returned and spread. She’s currently receiving chemotherapy, undergoing treatment on a cancer journey in which she continues to inspire!

In January of 2010, non-stop headaches prompted Lakevia’s mother to seek medical attention for her. Following a cat scan, it was not only revealed that her brain was not getting enough blood, but eventually that she also had sickle cell disease. Lakevia’s health journey has since included brain and open-heart surgery, and it’s not lost on Lakevia how fortunate she is to be alive. “I’m still here. Some kids, they don’t make it through all of this,” Lakevia says Whether it’s been for surgeries or treatment, Lakevia and her family have had a strong feeling of comfort thanks to having a care team close to home at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital. “When she’s had her surgery and everything here, she’s been known throughout the whole hospital. She’s just blessed,” says Canesha, Lakevia’s mother. "They all make me feel so comfortable. You know that they are here for you. I love everyone here, the whole team.”
