  • Atrium Health hosted a ribbon cutting event with renovation partners from Mecklenburg County and the City of Charlotte to help celebrate the re-opening of the one-mile strip of greenway on Little Sugar Creek that runs along Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. This portion of the greenway, known as the Liz Hair Trail, is part of the Cross Charlotte and Carolina Thread Trail networks. It is named to recognize Liz, a former county commissioner and an early advocate for the greenway system. Some of the updates include widened walking and biking trails, improved access points, better flood control and a new bridge with larger pedestrian lanes across the greenway on Leon Levine Drive. With these enhancements, the greenway not only honors a legacy but also invites visitors to reconnect with nature and embrace wellness in the heart of Charlotte.

"It is a unique and exciting opportunity to be a member of the founding team that will open the facility. We are recruiting for a variety of experienced skill sets to provide our patients the best care in the Lake Norman community," she says. To ensure the best possible care, Taylor highlights several initiatives: "Ongoing education and training, nurse mentorship and leadership development, workforce well-being and support, technology integration and support, interdisciplinary collaboration, patient-centered care models, nursing workforce shortage solutions, cultural competence, quality improvement programs and support for advanced practice roles." Looking ahead, Taylor sees critical changes in nursing. "In the next few years, I feel the role of nursing will evolve significantly due to technological advancements in the healthcare industry. I think that nurses will increasingly work with advanced technologies such as telemedicine, AI, electronic health records and robotic systems. These tools will help improve efficiency, patient monitoring, and diagnostic capabilities. For aspiring nurses, Taylor offers heartfelt advice. "Nursing is not just a job; it’s a profession. Discussions covered: ▪️ Improving rapid heart attack detection and treatment ▪️ The role of AI in diagnosing cardiac emergencies ▪️ Optimizing patient flow for faster treatment ▪️ The latest in eCPR and resuscitation efforts Collaboration across emergency medicine and cardiology is critical to improving outcomes. • For years, Karen Haynes, a 51-year-old guidance counselor from Barbados, struggled with the debilitating effects of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition that made even the simplest tasks exhausting. With no access to specialized cardiac surgery in Barbados, she turned to Atrium Health Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, where a team of world-class physicians stepped in to provide the cardiac care she needed. Through the Atrium Health International Medical Outreach Program, a dedicated team led by Dr. Larry Watts traveled to Barbados to perform the country’s first-ever septal myectomy—a life-saving procedure that gave Karen her life back. “This was a direct answer to prayer and the exhilarating reassurance that miracles happen still,” Karen shared. Now, she’s embracing life’s simple joys again — walking on the beach with her husband and breathing easier than she has in years. But her story is more than a personal victory; it’s a milestone for global cardiac care, paving the way for future collaborations that expand access to life-saving procedures.
