Veronica Christy, lead mammography technician at the Breast Care Center withinat Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Cancer Center, helps leads those efforts with a focus on compassion for patients and providing world-class care during screenings. Meet Atrium Health Navicent’s Dr. Laura Reed, a specialist in cardiac and thoracic surgery! She has the distinction of being the first female Cardiothoracic Surgeon to practice in the state of Georgia. Dr. Reed’s journey to providing care to patients in a cardiac environment actually began when she was young. While in elementary school, she read a book about the organs of the heart and went so far as to make a play dough model of the heart, something that Dr. Reed attributes to piquing her interest in medicine and eventually, cardiothoracic surgery. A Michigan native and fan of the Detroit Red Wings, she approaches patient care as if she is taking care of one of her loved ones. “I think about it as though I am taking care of my own family., I just like taking care of people and making them feel better,” Dr. Reed says. “I love what I do and I love the people here at Atrium. Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin’s breast cancer awareness events began last month with Dr. Tony Scott, director of the Breast Program at Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Cancer Center, was the guest speaker at our most recent lunch n’ learn event! Dr. Scott spoke about the importance of screenings for cancer detection as well as what risk factors to look for! Atrium Health Navicent Baldwin will also host a mammogram marathon on Oct. 19 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with walk-ins welcome. Screening grants are available for uninsured and underinsured patients. “We bring more than just medical relief. We bring hope,” shares Calvin Harvel, peer support specialist at Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte. Atrium Health’s MED-1 mobile hospital has been deployed to Tryon, NC, in response to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene. Activated by the state, MED-1 is the receiving hospital to triage, treat and transfer patients, as needed. The MED-1 team is comprised of dedicated health care professionals—nurses, doctors, trauma surgeons, paramedics, IT specialists and support staff. Wendy Henson, nurse leader with MED-1, says, “If you can make a difference, it’s completely worth it.”

Walk-in mammograms today! All Atrium Health Navicent mammography locations will host a Mammography Marathon from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. No appointment is necessary, and walk-ins are welcome. Applications are open through Oct. 15 for The Bridge To Success Program which helps selected applicants earn an associate degree by offering up to three years of up-front tuition and book assistance, with a maximum $5,250 tuition cost! Eligibility Criteria Includes: · Having graduated from high school or earned a GED equivalent within the last one to five years. · Applicants must work for Atrium Health Navicent for at least one year after earning an associate degree through the program. · Applicants must not have an existing college degree.
