Bridging borders through innovative care 🌎 We hosted nurses from Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, an organization that runs acute hospital services in the UK, in Charlotte, NC. The visit included a two-day experience focused on Advocate Health’s world-renowned virtual nursing program. Visiting nurses toured our 24/7 virtual nursing co-care unit at Atrium Health Pineville, where they learned more about Advocate Health’s comprehensive virtual nursing care models to implement similar programs at their own institutions abroad. In 2024 alone, Advocate Health’s virtual nursing programs provided care for more than 55,000 patients across more than two dozen hospitals in the six states where we practice. “As leaders in virtual nursing, it is our responsibility to work together with our global partners to improve care around the world,” shared Laura Rashleger, vice president of Nursing Operations. Hayley Peters, Chief Nurse at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust adds, “We are inspired by the opportunities we have seen to enhance person-centered care.” In collaboration with our counterparts, Advocate Health is committed to advancing care for patients around the world.

  • Kimberly’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and profound commitment to service, both to her country and to her patients at Atrium Health. A former US Army Nurse Corps Officer, Kimberly served from 1997 to 2005 at two of the Army’s most prestigious medical centers, Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Her journey has been marked by significant world events, including the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Recalling that day, she shared that “everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing.” Kimberly and her fellow Army nurses were stationed at the Army’s flagship hospital for trauma and burns, and they immediately sprang into action, preparing for the unknown. For Kimberly, her military experience taught her invaluable lessons about staying focused amidst chaos and uncertainty. “How do we continue to perform our jobs in the face of uncertainty and adversity?” she asked. This focus proved essential when the world was hit with the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Her time in the Army had prepared her to adapt and lead in moments of crisis, and she was able to quickly pivot to serve her patients and team as a CRNA at Atrium Health Pineville and the Endoscopy Centers. She shared, “Being an Army Nurse Corps officer during 9/11 taught me how to focus, not let all the outside distractions, myths, and fears get in the way of taking care of our patients and our staff.” Today, Kimberly continues to serve with the same unwavering dedication at Atrium Health, using the lessons she learned from her military service to give the best care possible. We’re proud to honor Kimberly’s story and thank her for her extraordinary service.
