Local expertise for bigger impact! 🌍 As the saying goes in South Africa ‘ Local is Lekker’ 🙌🏽 and we couldn’t agree more!  Having our co-headquarters in Johannesburg and a diverse, highly skilled team across Africa, enables us to work very closely with the communities that we serve. Our extensive talent pool in Africa spans across machine learning development, AI training data and evaluation, quality assurance, integration toolkit development, research, and product, to name a few. This strong local presence and local team base is the driving force behind our ability to fundamentally understand the needs of the populations who use our AI toolkits. We believe it’s a critical component to expanding equitable healthcare access, and our biggest differentiator. 💪🏽 If you would like to connect with one of our local team members, we are always happy to talk about how we can design, scale, and implement AI innovations that truly address the unique needs of African communities, ensuring equitable and effective healthcare. “Don’t assume people can’t use what you give them . Give people access and see the impact!”🙌🏽 This was a powerful message from Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, the Rwanda Minister of Health, at the recent Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers event hosted alongside the 79th UN General Assembly - attended by our CPO Sarah Morris and CFO Paul Isabelli. The Government of Rwanda, in collaboration with the Rwanda Biomedical Center (RBC) and UNICEF, has launched the Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) programme for pregnant women, to address the issue of malnutrition as a key component of Antenatal Care (ANC). 🤰🏽 So far they've distributed 50,000 MMS pills to pregnant women, and want to deploy nationwide, but production of the pill is slow. This is where Dr. Nsanzimana emphasised the need to reduce the bureaucracy to get things into people's hands to make access simple. As we close off National Nutrition Week in South Africa, and observe World Food Day today, it’s crucial to spotlight initiatives like the MMS programme. If our collective global goal is to ensure equitable healthcare access for all, then nutrition—especially in antenatal care—is at the heart of that mission 🙌🏽 Read more about the MMS programme here: https://bit.ly/48aSES3 Photo credit: UNICEF #WorldFoodDay #Rwanda

The woman is dressed in a maroon jacket, and the interaction seems to be taking place in a community setting, possibly a healthcare clinic. Several people in the background observe the exchange, and informational posters are visible on the walls. The atmosphere suggests a healthcare or outreach event aimed at serving the local community.

How do we effectively and ethically leverage digital interventions like AI and social media for HIV Prevention?   “I’ve spent the last 20 years scaling access to and engagement with consumer and health products - and never before has the uptake been faster, the promise greater, nor the potential perils around AI this large.” - these were the words of our CPO Sarah Morris as she opened the digital revolution and HIV prevention panel at the recent International AIDS Society HIVR4P event, which she co-moderated with Paula Massa.   🎙️ The session which hosted esteemed panelists from Ukraine, USA, Brazil, and Philippines, highlighted the concrete results in differentiated prevention delivery programs by leveraging inclusive, human-centered design to guide use of social media for demand generation, and ML for identifying vulnerable individuals.   💡 A key takeaway was the crucial role of co-design and community involvement in using these digital tools, particularly when it comes to social media demand generation for PrEP and varying preferences. As Speakers Danvic Rosadiño and Tetiana Deshko pointed out, what works for one market, doesn’t always work for another. You have to truly get to the core needs and nuanced behaviour of the community you are speaking to.    🙌🏽 And let’s not forget, as Valeria Cantos emphasised, to include the decision-makers and policymakers early on. To ask them what metrics they want to see shift and what they see as the goal and pathway to scale.    ⭐ Finally, we cannot ignore safety. We have to think about it early and often. Maaya Sundaram summed it up perfectly. “It’s fun to get a correct answer from an LLM, it’s a great party trick. But it needs to be right thousands of times to show accuracy, credibility, and repeatability.

Today on National Coming Out Day, it's essential to recognise the importance of safe spaces where people can feel supported and heard. Coming out is a deeply personal journey, and finding the right moment or words can be challenging. But what if technology could provide support? In recent co-design sessions with youth in South Africa, they shared that they're already using tools like Meta AI in WhatsApp regularly. With safety guardrails and connection to professional human support when needed, products leveraging emerging technologies like large language models (LLMs) could offer an innovative way for people to practice these conversations in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Whether role playing scenarios, asking for advice, or simply preparing to share their truth with the world, conversational tools could offer a little extra support when vulnerable populations need it most. "Coming out is one of the most powerful tools of activism because, at its most benign, prejudice and discrimination seek to shame and demean LGBTQ people into silence and invisibility.” - Former South Africa MP Zakhele Mbhele.   #NationalComingOutDay #LGBTQ

A yellow triangle with a purple circle inside, representing intersex individuals, is also part of the design, highlighting inclusivity for a broader spectrum of identities. The flag waves against a clear blue sky.

Nothing makes me happier than being in a room with brilliant minds across research, implementation, and policy in #AI, that truly care about the wellbeing of people and are innovating and taking on all of the incredible challenges that go along with this crazy but exciting wave and all of the opportunities to use it for good and build it responsibly. Thank you Rouella Mendonca for the seamless partnership as we tell the story of HealthPulse AI by Audere together at the Digital Health Counsel 2024 AI Summit by Ogden Murphy Wallace, and wonderful to meet inspiring women entrepreneurs like Karishma Patel, and many others. It reminds me of the reasons why we are all here.

“Lifestyle conversational tools could be a new real-time window into the social determinates of health.“ 🙌🏽 Great insight from our Product Manager Natalie M. who spoke at the ITPC CLM Summit in Johannesburg yesterday about the potential of AI to enhance and supplement community led monitoring (CLM). Natalie highlighted the role of empathic conversational AI as a ground up community generated data source for deeper insights into the healthcare needs of a population - and how our multimodal AI toolkit can support this. cc Yogan Pillay Dino Rech Solange Baptiste Simon Siobhan Malone

The presenter stands at a podium on a stage in front of a large projection screen displaying a slide titled "Self-care from Anywhere for SRH, HIV & Mental Health." The slide discusses how a multinational hybrid AI toolkit can empower self-care, highlighting aspects like personalized data, informed governance, and care pathways.

The audience is seated, with some participants looking engaged, while others are taking notes. The room has modern, professional decor, with conference materials such as notebooks and water bottles on the tables in front of the attendees.
