Last night, we hosted an incredible group of people at the COOKFOX Architects' gorgeous facility to release the new 10-year strategy for The Biomimicry Institute. We are embarking towards this 10-year vision to dramatically scale the impact that biomimicry is having on some of the biggest challenges facing the world today. Since our founding 20 years ago, we have worked to spread the practice of looking to the solutions developed by living organisms over billions of years to provide insight and inspiration for effective, efficient, and sustainable innovations and approaches to addressing our own challenges. Now—and with a plan for the next five years—we will systematically work across sectors and disciplines so that the brilliance of our natural world and all living systems is actionable knowledge. We believe that the large-scale application of lessons from nature’s strategies can have an outsized impact on three main areas: 🌏 Climate Change 🏞 Loss of Biodiversity 🌿 Human Sense of Disconnection from Nature To ensure that the practice of biomimicry draws from the fullness of human knowledge, the Biomimicry Institute will work over the next five years to partner ethically and equitably with individuals and groups informed by both traditional Indigenous knowledge and academic sciences. Through thoughtful urgency and collaboration, we will reconnect humans with the rest of nature and drive action and change for a sustainable future through innovative, nature-inspired solutions. Read our new strategy here https://lnkd.in/gXiZVECb and join us in making it a reality. About us
The Biomimicry Institute (biomimicry.org) is on a mission to help solve humanity’s biggest challenges through the adoption of biomimicry (nature-inspired innovation) in education, culture, and industry. For eons, nature has solved its problems with well-adapted designs, life-friendly chemistry, and smart material and energy use. We exist to shine a light on nature’s genius, and bridge pressing design challenges with proven biological strategies for a better future. Our initiatives across education, innovation, inspiration, and systems change have empowered thousands with the tools and training necessary to create a healthier world, and to improve their lives in the process. To amplify our impact, we unite a global network of educators, innovators, changemakers, scientists, and others passionate about solving environmental and social challenges through nature-inspired design. Our work will not be complete until biomimicry is at the core of the human experience and the sustainable health of the planet is secure.

Secrets of a Shimmering Berry The fruit of the marble berry shimmers like glitter––yet somehow does it without littering the world with sparkly, toxic microplastics. Prepare to learn its secret. Unlike other plants that rely on pigments for coloration, marble berry (Pollia condensata) achieves its striking appearance through a unique, microscopic surface structure. The fruit’s outer layer contains cells whose walls are composed of spiraling stacks of tiny cellulose fibers. The layers are spaced at distances that match different wavelengths of visible light. When light hits a berry, if the ups and downs of the waves bouncing off different layers align, they amplify each other, making the reflected light appear much more intense. Adding to the effect, the variation in layer thickness from cell to cell causes each cell to reflect different wavelengths of light, resulting in a pixelated or pointillist effect where tiny dots of different shades of blue, green, and purple appear across the surface of the fruit. The curvature of the cells adds to these effects as well, helping to make the color appear vibrant, multi-toned, and almost alive with shifting hues depending on the angle of observation. Now the team at Sparxell, a 2023 Ray of Hope cohort member, has harnessed this phenomenon to create clean, biodegradable pigments that can replace traditional plastic glitter, sequins, and paint additives, making sure the brighter future we envision shimmers and shines as well.
