About us

Nonprofit organizations have the power to drive significant and substantive change. But all too often, lean budgets, short timelines, and the continuous demands of global fundraising and board development can lead to burnout, stagnation and diminishing returns for nonprofit staff, executives, and volunteer leadership. Bonsai Leadership aspires to help nonprofit organizations increase their positive impact on people, both inside and outside of their doors. Through leadership consulting, coaching and recruiting, we will work with you and your team to identify and vocalize challenges; uncover new talents and hidden strengths; strengthen your skills and develop better ways of working; and achieve new levels of success.

  • Helping Black women rise within the nonprofit world is LaTresse Snead's why and it’s a joy to participate in the new Black Girl Environmentalist College Mentorship Program. BGE is helping to equip college students with the guidance they need to advance their career in the environmental and climate sector by pairing early career Black women and gender expansive folks with leaders across the climate space, from politics to marine sciences. The last few months have been packed with BGE goodness. LaTresse spoke at a fireside chat with the program mentees and shared hurdles she has faced, gave career tips and insights, and answered the group’s questions about nonprofit life. Through the program, LaTresse was paired with Miarri Phillips, a recent graduate of the University of Colorado Denver. Miarri’s organization, Green Goddess, creates a space for girls of color to be their authentic selves through outdoor exploration, holistic healing, environmental justice action trips, mentorship, career readiness, and brand partnerships. Her vision is to curate equitable and inclusive environments for young women of color to foster community, culture, and connectedness. We’re excited to see where you take Green Goddess, Miarri! #environmentaljustice #mentorship #blackgirlmagic

  • Building a diverse nonprofit organization isn’t just about creating diverse candidate pools so that you have more opportunities to hire talented BIPOC folks. It’s also about retention. It’s no surprise that happy employees stay at their jobs longer. And it just makes business sense to put resources and efforts toward retaining staff, since the estimated cost to hire a new employee and get them up to speed is 3-4x the position’s salary (according to SHRM). Where do you start? Get J. La Mar Pipkins 3 first steps to retain BIPOC staff. #coaching #nonprofitleadership #nonprofitcoaching

As CEO of Bonsai Leadership Group, I help nonprofit organizations recruit and retain talented professionals. Author, "When Black Women Rise." 🌳

One of my clients read my book and asked, "How do I become a sponsor for the Black women at my nonprofit? How can I effectively use my power to cultivate someone else?"     I LOVE this question.     So, how do you become an effective sponsor? Create the conditions for someone to experience something different and to be seen differently.     When you go from a coordinator to a manager, or a manager to director, or director to VP --  you just don't know what you don’t know … until you've been exposed to these new spaces. Consider:     🌱 Is there a big project coming up, like a national advocacy campaign? If so, can you lift someone up who otherwise wouldn't be considered for this visible opportunity?     🌱 Is there someone who has a certain spark, drive, or budding area of interest that would really grow with some nurturing?     I'll never forget when my own sponsor started inviting me to meetings with executive peers. If they wanted his opinions, he’d first turn to me and ask what I thought.     His peers were given an opportunity to engage with me and experience my leadership for themselves.     And because I felt seen, appreciated, and included, I gave the role my all.    As he left for another opportunity, he advocated for me one last time -- telling the interim CEO I was someone who had brought tremendous value but had been overlooked and underestimated.     Sponsors are key to achieving equity at the workplace. Without someone rooting for us, the systemic inequalities embedded in many nonprofit cultures means that deserving people of color never get the opportunities they should.     So, who are you willing to put your reputation on the line for, so that THEY can grow into the roles they’re meant for? Think about it.     In the meantime, have you had a sponsor that helped you get to where you are? Tag them below so we can celebrate them together.       #Sponsorship #NonprofitTeam #Environment #Conservation #Diversity
