Improving human safety globally through a cyber security performance framework. "Someone should do Something" - We are
About us
Securing our nation’s critical infrastructure requires complex collaboration between security experts in numerous industries across the private and public sectors. Building Cyber Security is the first-ever non-profit whose sole purpose is to lead the battle against nation states and criminals attacking the technology we rely on for our existence in order to enhance human safety. "Someone should do Something..." We are.

We are thrilled to partner with IFMA Canada on a timely workshop on Oct 2 in Toronto to raise awareness on the growing cyber threats to buildings (beyond pagers or walkie talkies...). This half day, in-person, action-packed session is specifically produced for facility managers (not the IT team) to know exactly what can be done to mitigate cyber risk in connected buildings systems. The threat is growing - its not a matter of if, but when! Participants will gain the upper edge on reducing cyber vectors of attack for the safety of tenants. If you can't make Toronto on Oct 2, we will be conducting a similar cyber resilience workshop in San Antonio TX on Oct 8 as part of IFMA's global #WorldWorkPlace conference. Please share with your facility management network on linked in. E.J. von Schaumburg Fred Gordy Ari R. Sean Plankey Aaron C. A sincere thanks to ESFM’s Tech SVP, Chris Lilly and #IFMA Elizabeth Sheldon for highlighting the real threat to modern smart buildings relying on automated and smart technologies. Systems such as fire alarms, elevators, boilers, access controls, and HVAC are integral to building operations but also susceptible to cyber-attacks. “Building owners may not be aware that many of these systems have remote access or exposed internet addresses on the web... Within minutes, buildings and infrastructure can be rendered unsafe for occupancy or use, forcing evacuations and other protective steps, which may take weeks or months to recover.” If you are you ready to arm yourself with the essential knowledge to protect your facility from cyber threats, enroll in IFMA's comprehensive course developed with BCS to know the basics of cybersecurity and how to safeguard your facility. THE BCS TEAM WILL BE LIVE in Toronto, Canada on Oct 2, 2024 with the IFMA/BOMA Canada team to conduct a workshop on mitigating cyber risk to facilities and revenue. We’ll also be conducting a workshop in San Antonio on Oct 8, 2024 as part of IFMA’s World Workplace conference. More details coming. If you want to attend, please contact us. If you know of a colleague who should attend- please repost. E.J. von Schaumburg Fred Gordy Ari R. Sean Plankey Aaron C. How Facility Managers Can Defend Operational Technology in Commercial Buildings

At first, the unprecedented attack injuring thousands throughout Lebanon today using pagers as explosive devices could be labeled a cyber attack carried out on connected devices. But we agree with the WJS below that the more likely scenario was the placement of small amounts of explosives in each pager with a coordinated detonation. Still, this incident reinforces the concern addressed by Building Cyber Security that the #cyberexploitation of connected devices presents a risk to us all. We know that any technology connected with a chip could be manipulated to create an unsafe condition. We must counter this risk by investing in protections aligned with our BCS Framework, starting with checking your inventory for supply chain vulnerabilities. We are committed to making the world of connected devices a safer place. E.J. von Schaumburg Fred Gordy Ari R. Sean Plankey Aaron C. The #SEC just made life more miserable for a cyber victim levying a $2 million fine. According to the filing below, the company was determined to be negligent to its shareholders in devising controls to adequately detect, respond to, and disclose an attack that included data exfiltration and service disruption. The SEC is serious about penalizing companies when their investigation concludes they aren't doing enough to protect their operations or their shareholder interests. Do CEO’s and Boards have cyber expertise? Do they have programs to mitigate risk? Do they have processes in place to assess what is a material event and to report a cyber incident? Are there programs guided by industry frameworks and controls to assess the adequacy of their cyber protections? Building Cyber Security has developed industry frameworks to assist with the oversight over security service providers and the design/implementation of effective risk mitigation controls. Every legal department needs to read the ruling and heed the lessons. With increased regulatory scrutiny, it's time for companies to invest in cyber risk mitigation over risk transfer. The global cyber incident affecting our lives today is NOT a cyber attack. Many of us rely on subscription services to add a layer of protection to our computers. We agree that they can update and “push” those protections periodically to counter emerging cyber threats. This service mitigates the risk of a cyber attack for all of us. One of the companies, #Crowdstrike, pushed an update last night engineered with an obsure flaw that caused systems to go down. The flaw was immediately fixed and computer services globally are in the process of being restored. This incident does illustrate the fragility of our dependence on computers and the internet for our daily lives. Cyber expert James Bore notes that “real harm would be caused by the outage because systems we’ve come to rely on at critical times are not going to be available…There are going to be deaths because of this. It’s inevitable.’’ He's right. BCS knows that cyber security is a matter of public safety. Just as we recall autos, food, drugs, and products over safety concerns, we need national policy and industries to establish safety standards for the engineering of both software and the connected technologies they interact with. That’s exactly what BCS has done for the connected technologies we use in facilities and infrastructure. A cyber incident can threaten lives or health in a matter of minutes. We need to deliberately and effectively mitigate that risk. Please repost to your network if you agree. E.J. von Schaumburg Fred Gordy Ari R. Sean Plankey Aaron C.
