We’re loving the new Riverside Avondale Preservation artistic crosswalks installed by Heartspace Art. These crosswalks will play a crucial role in increasing the visibility of pedestrians, making our roads safer for everyone. By using vibrant colors and creative designs, these crosswalks catch drivers’ attention, encouraging them to slow down and be more aware of pedestrians. This effective measure aligns with Vision Zero, a nationwide initiative that City of Jacksonville has adopted. Vision Zero aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries by implementing strategies that prioritize safety over speed. Artistic crosswalks are a key component in Jacksonville’s commitment to creating safer streets for all residents. This approach is also a part of tactical urbanism, where creative, low-cost interventions like street murals are used to enhance public spaces and foster a stronger sense of community. “The rainbow crosswalks serve as a powerful form of placemaking, transforming a neighborhood street into a symbol of inclusion and community pride. We had a great time sharing resources and school supplies over the past few weekends as our community helped parents prepare for Back to School! If you're at the stadium for the Jacksonville Jaguars game today, check out the big screen during the third quarter! The Jaguars will be honoring Nicole Hamm, Executive Director of Blue Zones Project Jacksonville as the Community Champion of the Game, presented by Florida Blue. Nicole was selected due to the transformative impact she is having in our community to encourage active lifestyles, promote social connections, and foster healthier environments. Long term, the net impact of our work will contribute to longer lifespans and increased quality of life for Jacksonville residents. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to be part of the Leadership Jacksonville Next Generation Class of 2024. Alongside 40 other brilliant young professionals from the First Coast, we delved into Jacksonville's current landscape from exploring the vibrant arts and culture scene to engaging in local policy discussions with Mayor Deegan, and much more. As part of a special project, I had the chance to explore Jacksonville's parks and recreational areas, highlighting some of the city's most beautiful natural gems right in our own backyard. This experience not only deepened my appreciation for what makes Jacksonville an exceptional place to live, work, and play but also allowed me to connect with both current and future leaders who are dedicated to driving positive change in our community.

Blue Zones Project Jacksonville’s Policy team is part of the City of Jacksonville’s Vision Zero Task Force. We will convene for the next 6 months to design an actionable plan to make our streets safer, with a goal of eliminating bicycle and pedestrian fatalities by 2030. We’re proud to join the nation wide initiative and look forward to a safer Jacksonville.
