Every four years the American people elect the President and Vice President and the President is sworn into office at an Inauguration held on the 20th day of January following the election. The newly-elected President takes the Oath stated in Article II, Section 1, of the U.S. Constitution that “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” A President may serve two terms in office, and those terms do not need to be held consecutively, as is the case with President Donald Trump and was the case with President Grover Cleveland.
