Improving California's health care system, so it works for all Californians.
About us
The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is dedicated to advancing meaningful, measurable improvements in the way the health care delivery system provides care to the people of California, particularly those with low incomes and those whose needs are not well served by the status quo. We work to ensure that people have access to the care they need, when they need it, at a price they can afford. CHCF informs policymakers and industry leaders, invests in ideas and innovations, and connects with changemakers to create a more responsive, patient-centered health care system. When the 2017 Napa-Sonoma wildfires struck, promotoras became crucial lifelines for Latino/x families who might have fallen through the cracks of disaster relief. These Spanish-speaking community health workers didn't just provide services – they brought understanding and cultural connection to communities in crisis. Now, the Promotora Cooperative Initiative is transforming these vital roles into sustainable careers. At CHCF, we know that investing in community health workers strengthens our entire health care safety net. See more on The CHCF Blog: https://lnkd.in/gbbSKC7K #HealthEquity #CommunityHealth

Exciting news for culturally responsive healthcare in California! 🎉 Medi-Cal is taking a groundbreaking step by expanding coverage to include traditional healing practices for substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. California is one of just four states granted a waiver by CMS to broaden access to culturally-based SUD care. Virginia Hedrick, Executive Director of the California Consortium for Urban Indian Health, announced this transformative change in a recent DHCS video. This move represents a significant stride towards more inclusive, effective health care for all Californians. By incorporating traditional healing practices, Medi-Cal is not just treating substance use disorders—it's honoring diverse cultural approaches to wellness and recovery. This is a crucial step in addressing health disparities and ensuring that treatment resonates with patients' cultural backgrounds. We're eager to see how this change will positively impact SUD treatment outcomes and overall health equity in our state. What are your thoughts on this development?

Last week on The CHCF Blog, we published an inspiring story about tackling one of healthcare's biggest challenges: misinformation. Irving Washington, a veteran in the journalism world, has taken on a crucial role at George Kaiser Family Foundation to combat health misinformation. His Health Misinformation and Trust Initiative is doing groundbreaking work to identify, track, and counter false health narratives. Here's what caught our attention: 1️⃣ The launch of the Health Misinformation Monitor - a biweekly service exposing and debunking health misinformation. 2️⃣ Their focus on emerging trends like health influencers on TikTok and AI tools predicting misinformation's impact. 3️⃣ Washington's emphasis on trust as our most valuable tool in fighting misinformation. At CHCF, we understand the critical importance of accurate health information, especially for underserved communities. While health misinformation remains a significant challenge, initiatives like this give us hope. They remind us of the power of reliable information in creating a healthier, more equitable California.
