⭐ Big news for carbon removal! Carbon removal has a new international standard ahead of COP29. The Article 6.4 Supervisory Body, part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, finalized requirements for activities involving carbon removal under the Article 6.4 Mechanism. ✒ The carbon removal definition used in the international standard aligns with the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) definition that the Carbon Business Council called for. ✉ The Carbon Business Council organized a letter signed by more than 100 carbon removal leaders from around the world to the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body’s expanding on why carbon removal is an essential component for a just energy transition and to limit warming to 1.5 °C, along with the variety of co-benefits from carbon removal pathways. The letter requested for the Article 6.4 Supervisory Body to adopt the UN’s IPCC definition of carbon removal to create a level playing field for removals and spur innovation. 🔖 The A6.4-SBM014-A06 standard lays the groundwork for tech-neutral policy for carbon removal, and includes removals storage in “geological, terrestrial, or ocean reservoirs, or in products.” The implementation of the standard will be an ongoing process, including what methodologies are eligible. 🌎 Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement shapes how global carbon markets operate. ICYMI 🇺🇸 Big announcement for carbon removal! The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) - DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations has announced up to $1.8 billion in funding to support the advancement of direct air capture (DAC) technologies. This funding will cover the design, construction, and operation of mid- and large-scale commercial DAC facilities, infrastructure scaling platforms, and the expansion of Regional DAC Hubs. 🚀 ➡ https://lnkd.in/eMbGB6JA Key funding areas include: 1️⃣ Infrastructure scaling platforms: Up to $250M per project for sites that provide DAC developers access to clean energy and shared CO2 processing infrastructure. 2️⃣ Mid-scale DAC facilities: Capturing 2,000–25,000 tons of CO2 annually, with up to $50M per project. 3️⃣ Large-scale DAC facilities: Capturing 25,000+ tons of CO2 annually, with up to $600M per project. 🏗️ While the majority of funding will target larger projects, support for mid-scale facilities and infrastructure aims to bridge the gap, enhancing the impact of the anticipated Regional DAC Hubs. By providing flexible funding across multiple years, OCED seeks to provide more opportunities to benefit from the latest generations of DAC technology and ensure the funding supports the highest-impact projects. 📅 Anticipated timeline: The full funding solicitation is expected in winter 2024, with recurring opportunities to apply. 😃 Happy World Carbon Removal Day! 🧡 💬 Today, the carbon removal community unites with one powerful voice to share a simple yet crucial message: Carbon Removal is essential for a hopeful future. 📣 Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is a vital pillar of climate action, alongside deep emissions reductions and adaptation to our rapidly changing climate. CDR must work hand-in-hand with efforts to cut emissions, creating a balanced approach to tackling climate change. 🙌 We are proud to work with an incredible coalition of companies developing diverse, promising approaches for gigaton-scale climate impact. We are also grateful for the chance to collaborate with policymakers, the energy industry, and the environmental community to advocate for the responsible growth of the carbon management industry. 🤝 Achieving gigaton-scale carbon removal requires unprecedented community engagement to earn the social license to operate, maximize benefits, and minimize risks. This is why we, along with our partners, have developed a suite of resources and trainings focused on the responsible deployment of carbon removal. 🌍 On this inaugural Carbon Removal Day, we invite you to explore how we can responsibly scale carbon removal and achieve gigaton-scale climate impact, helping to restore our climate for a better world. 🔗 Explore our resources: https://lnkd.in/ejEwz3WD #CarbonRemovalDay #CarbonRemoval #ClimateTech

🌍 What could a future vision of a CDR-integrated utility look like? 📣 ICYMI, we’ve launched our newest report on ‘Utilities and Carbon Removal’, made possible with support from Breakthrough Energy Energy: https://lnkd.in/gBETtNKC 💡 Utilities spend a significant share of their budgets on assets and infrastructure, creating ample opportunities for CDR investments. Utility-managed forests and rights-of-way generate biomass waste that can be integrated with CDR practices, and utility purchasing power can drive demand for low-carbon and carbon-negative materials like cement and steel. ⚡In Chapter 3 of the Utilities and Carbon Removal report, we identified several key opportunities for utilities to integrate CDR into their existing assets and operations. Operational Opportunities: 🌲 Integrating vegetation management with CDR practices can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support wildfire mitigation efforts, while opening up new revenue streams. 🏭 Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) offers a an alternative clean energy resource that can use accumulated biomass from wildfire management, cutting emissions while reusing existing infrastructure. 🏗️ Capital projects represent a major opportunity to integrate carbon-negative materials and spur industry innovation. How a utility identifies and executes a CDR program will require careful consideration — and buy-in from local and state policymakers. 🏛️CDR developers will need to work creatively with utilities and policymakers to establish workable policy structures and rates to serve the needs of the carbon removal and wider community. #CarbonRemoval #Utilities #ClimateAction

Last night at #ClimateWeekNYC, Carbonfuture, Carbon Business Council, and NextGen CDR co-hosted a fantastic dinner that brought together corporate sustainability leaders, policymakers, and innovators to address one of the biggest challenges of our time—achieving net-zero. 🔍 The challenge: To reach net-zero, we need deep emissions cuts and carbon removal at scale—and we need to act now on both. 🌱 The focus: How corporate leadership, government policy, and innovation can drive the scaling of carbon removal. With a full room of corporate leaders, including representatives from Mitsubishi Corporation, J.P. Morgan, Citi, AIG, Prudential Financial, Liberty Mutual Insurance, BMO, Aflac, and MetLife, the energy was incredible. Guests arrived early and stayed late—something rare during Climate Week NYC. Anthony Lydgate from WIRED guided the conversation, featuring an outstanding lineup of speakers who shared actionable insights under Chatham House rules. We are deeply grateful to our incredible speakers:  ♦ Vanessa Z Chan, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)Randy Spock, GoogleKaran Mistry, PhD, Boston Consulting Group (BCG)Louis Mark, AutodeskNoah Deich, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)  ♦ Rebecca Kershaw, High-Level Climate Champions  ♦ Greg Stangl, Phoenix Energy    Key takeaway: Achieving net-zero will require bold leadership, innovative policymaking, and rapid scaling of carbon removal solutions.   Highlights: 🔹 Cross-sector collaboration is key for scaling carbon removal. We need a private-sector-led, government-enabled ecosystem to make it happen. 🔹 Corporate leadership is essential, with more companies investing and a broader effort beyond the usual CDR buyers. 🔹 Innovation is there—solutions like digital MRV de-risk carbon removal purchases for buyers, and technologies like biochar not only remove carbon but create jobs, generate energy, and positively impact communities. Thank you to all our co-hosts, speakers, and guests! #NetZero #CarbonRemoval #CDR #CorporateLeadership #Sustainability CC Leila Toplic, Dominic Lüdin, Craig Stokes, Brian Kemerling, Michael Railey, Megan Kemp, Ben Rubin, Isabella Corpora Brian E Kurtz
