🔔 Purchase announcement 🔔 NextGen CDR have entered into an offtake agreement with India's leading CDR Developer, Alt Carbon. 🌍 This agreement marks the first enhanced rock weathering project in NextGen's portfolio, and completes our technology mix, joining #DACS, #BECCs, #productmineralisation, and #biochar projects. It is also our first purchase from outside the EU and US, exhibiting our commitment to a truly global portfolio of CDR at an average price of $200/tonne. 🚀 Alt Carbon spreads basalt on tea plantations in the Himalayan foothills, where the humid weather conditions speed up the rock’s ability to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and store it in the soil for over 10,000 years. Alt Carbon is integrating its novel method of enhanced rock weathering with traditional farming practices and through NextGen’s purchase, can grow its capacity to improve soil health, undertake carbon removal, while also supporting farmers working in a heritage industry threatened by climate change. 💫 We are thrilled to partner with Shrey Agarwal and Sparsh Agarwal and the whole of the Alt Carbon team on behalf of our JV partners South Pole and Mitsubishi Corporation, and founding buyers Boston Consulting Group (BCG), UBS, LGT Private Banking, Swiss Re and Mitsui O.S.K. How should cities be thinking about carbon removal? In a new report by XPRIZE, South Pole, and the Global Carbon Removal Partnership, with C40 Cities and the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) as supporting partners, we explore this topic in depth. ➡ Download here: https://lnkd.in/gCrSyeUC As climate change intensifies, the case for CDR interventions in and by cities becomes increasingly apparent. Urban settlements are responsible for ~70% of global CO2 emissions, and cities are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, facing threats such as extreme heat, flooding and sea-level rise that pose considerable risks to infrastructure, public health and socioeconomic stability. 274 cities have net zero goals and over 1000 cities are part of the Cities Race to Zero campaign, but very few have carbon removal plans or a vision around how to neutralize residual emissions. By strategically harnessing the co-benefits of CDR, cities can contribute to other urban priorities while progressing towards net-zero goals. There are a number of different ways cities can support and scale CDR efforts depending on their unique context, priorities, and capacity. We outline a range of these in the report as well as dozens of examples already underway by pioneering cities already leading the way.
