Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15. It began as a week-long celebration in 1968 and has since expanded to a month, which provides more time to properly recognize the significant contributions Hispanic/Latino Americans have made in the United States. During this month, celebrate by taking the time to learn more about Latino identity and historical legacies that enrich communities and continue to shape our country.

Since 2018, CHA has been a proud signatory of the AIA Materials Pledge, committing to specify healthy materials that support Human Health, Social Equity, Ecosystem Health, Climate Health, and a Circular Economy. We're dedicated to incorporating these values into every project. As we wrap up reporting for 2023 projects, we're setting a baseline to measure our progress so we can make greater strides in the years ahead. The AIA Materials Pledge is a commitment by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to promote the use of environmentally responsible materials in architecture and construction. It emphasizes the importance of selecting materials that are sustainable, have a low environmental impact, and contribute to healthier indoor environments. The pledge encourages architects and designers to consider factors like resource efficiency, toxicity, and life cycle impacts when making material choices. By taking the pledge, professionals align themselves with best practices in sustainable design, aiming to advance the building industry towards greater ecological stewardship and resilience.

July marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signed in 1990, a landmark law in our country ensuring rights and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. This month promotes visibility and celebrates the members of this community and their valuable contributions in our field and beyond. At CHA we recognize the vital importance of ADA and Disability Pride Month and we reaffirm our dedication to continue our work for more accessible and equitable design. Let's continue educating ourselves and advocating for disability rights and inclusion in our communities and nation!

Last week, CHA embraced Juneteenth with knowledge and action. This year, we dove into a powerful documentary 'Stamped from the Beginning' to deepen our understanding of America's history of racial inequities. We are also amplifying our commitment to inclusivity and racial equity by expanding our office library with books on race in architecture and design. Together, let's building a future where every voice and story is heard.

Celebrating 1 year since the grand opening of The Joyce! Built in 1912, The Joyce originally served as a hotel, then long-stay hostel until 2016. PHB created the opportunity for Community Partners for Affordable Housing to turn this piece of historic Portland building stock into Permanent Supportive Housing, providing shelter and services to those transitioning out of homelessness. The building includes 66 single-room occupancy units at 30% AMI. On site services include counseling and supportive services through Cascadia Behavioral Health, Native American Rehabilitation Association, and Cascade AIDS project.

Congrats to the whole team with South Hill Commons, we were honored to be a part of the celebration of this incredible project.
We recently got to celebrate the grand opening of South Hills Commons, a 70-unit affordable housing complex in Pendleton. The development includes 1, 2, and 3 bedroom options for low-income families as well as a group home and supported living apartments for adults experiencing intellectual or developmental disabilities. We applaud Horizon Project's work in making this project a reality. We're excited to see South Hills not only become a home for many, but provide much-needed supports that help these individuals thrive in their community. Thank you to all the partners who made this happen!

A new case study from Bridge Meadows shows how their 'holistic approach to housing can lead to stronger, more cohesive communities.'
This new #casestudy co-authored by our Executive Director, Derenda Schubert and our Development & Communications Director, Lisa S. (Lisa Steenson) was just published by the American Society on Aging , and we’re excited to share it with you. The study provides a case for support of intergenerational housing solutions through the story of community member Linda, a grandmother of two who turned to Bridge Meadows as she faced multiple challenges to her family’s stability and unity. We thank the American Society on Aging in addition to Bank of America and Cambia Health Solutions for their commitment to supporting our work. #NationalFosterCareMonth

A big congratulations to Allyssa Corpuz, the 2024 William Hart Scholar! We had an amazing time celebrating Allyssa along with the four other Architecture Foundation of Oregon 2024 Scholarship recipients last Thursday. Allyssa is a Bachelor of Architecture student candidate at the University of Oregon. She hopes to focus her architectural career on the 'development of more housing solutions for those who are low income and/or experiencing homelessness,' while addressing issues of climate change.
