  • Building Bridges to Increase Civic Engagement and Social Capital: A Community Foundation's Role in a Local Journalism Collaborative "At Central Florida Foundation, we specialize in bringing diverse perspectives together to achieve solutions and positive incremental change for complex social issues. Through our Thrive Community & Social Connection focus area, we work toward strengthening social capital in the region and fostering civic engagement through initiatives such as TableTalk and 100 Women Strong at Central Florida Foundation. Now, we’re proud to announce a new initiative within this space: a groundbreaking regional journalism collaborative. Ten local news organizations—natural competitors in a fragmented media landscape—have come together to serve their audiences better. They will be examining and reporting on the local impact of Florida’s new law, House Bill 1365 or HB 1365, on Unauthorized Public Camping and Public Sleeping bill, which went into effect on January 1st, 2025." • It's all anyone can talk about: it's cold here in Florida. But unlike most of us who have a warm place to sleep at night, it's a challenge as temperatures drop and our homeless population struggles to find shelter. Despite the region's rapid development, there are limited resources for those experiencing homelessness, forcing individuals to endure freezing nights in unsafe conditions. Understanding the realities faced by the unhoused and looking at systems-level change are first steps in addressing these systemic gaps - which is typically our focus as a community foundation. However, there is still the immediate need: a warm night's sleep - tonight. The Kelly Family Cuidiú Foundation, through its Fund at Central Florida Foundation, made a grant to United Global Outreach, enabling the organization to purchase outdoor heaters to keep unhoused residents warm during the upcoming chilly nights. Balancing immediate need with systems-level solutions is always a balance. While we work with community partners to find solutions for our housing and homelessness issues, meeting the needs of today can be just as critical. Learn more about this issue area on our First You Talk podcast, episodes 1 and 7. https://lnkd.in/eFb5cmYp Pictured: A Bithlo man warms up during a cold night in Central Florida this week with new heaters, which were purchased through a grant to United Global Outreach, Inc, a nonprofit supporting the underserved East Orlando community.

  • For those seeking to support the communities affected by the California wildfires, below is the region's community foundation and a link to its relief fund. To our Fundholders, if you'd like assistance with making a contribution, whether directly to the California Community Foundation or through another avenue, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to help.

It’s been a heartbreaking start to 2025, with over 80,000 residents evacuated, thousands of homes lost, and tragic fatalities in Southern California. We hope everyone is staying safe and alert. For status updates on the fires and evacuation information, please follow @lacountyfd for additional resources. If you are wondering how to help, you can make a difference in supporting recovery and future emergency preparedness by contributing to CCF’s Wildfire Recovery Fund. Using data from CalFire and the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index, our focus is on reaching underserved communities to ensure every dollar goes where it’s needed most and no one is left behind. The Wildfire Recovery Fund provides life-saving support: safe housing, mental health care, medical aid, infrastructure rebuilding, emergency communication upgrades, financial assistance, firefighter safety gear, and more. The fund also offers labor law education and immigration services for low-wage workers, as well as health education for caregivers and day laborers. Learn more about the fund and donate on our site. Together, we will rebuild a resilient and healthy SoCal. https://lnkd.in/gNY4WPBJ
