This week, we are highlighting Nicholas Miller, one of our dedicated Water Utility Maintenance Workers. Nicholas has been with the city for two years, and his position plays an essential role in maintaining and improving our water systems. He previously worked for our Public Works department and has recently been promoted to Water Utility Maintenance Worker II. His colleagues know him as a reliable and dedicated team member, always willing to lend his expertise and work collaboratively to solve problems. He loves working for the city and appreciates that he has a short commute, which allows him to focus more on the job he enjoys. Originally born in Arizona and raised in Illinois, Nicholas comes from a family deeply rooted in public service—his father works in Code Compliance, and his brother serves as a lifeguard. Outside of work, Nicholas has a passion for rock and metal music, with bands like Nuclear Remains, Tool, Alice in Chains, and Megadeth being some of his favorites. His colleagues know him as a reliable and dedicated team member, always willing to lend his expertise and work collaboratively to solve problems. He also loves to travel up north and fish during his free time. We are grateful for Nicholas’s hard work and dedication to maintaining one of our city’s core infrastructure. His contributions have made a significant impact, and we look forward to seeing his continued success with the city. 🙌

Today, our mayor attended the 9/11 ceremony at Avalon Charter Elementary and was moved by the heartfelt tribute from the children honoring those lost on that tragic day. Their performances, including powerful songs celebrating American strength, were a true testament to the spirit of remembrance. They also honored the brave law enforcement officers and first responders for their unwavering dedication in protecting our country, both on 9/11 and every day since, ensuring the safety and security of our communities. 🚓🚒

🌟This week, we're spotlighting Shane Kiesow, our dedicated Public Works Manager. Shane has been an employee of our city for an impressive 20 years! His favorite aspect of the job is working alongside a great team in a challenging environment that fosters growth and allows him to make a positive impact on the community. Originally from Northwest Minnesota, Shane is married and the proud father of two daughters, Eva and Sophia. Describing himself as hardworking, reliable, and family-oriented, Shane is proud to bring these characteristics to his role at Apache Junction. He enjoys driving tractors, loves nature, and rides his motorcycle nearly every day to work. Shane is a fan of classic country music, which helps him concentrate as he listens on his CD player while doing desk work. He also has a deep love for history, which was his favorite subject in school. But what truly makes Shane smile? His daughters, of course. We’re grateful for Shane’s dedication and look forward to seeing the continued impact he’ll have on our community!

Congratulations to our Parks and Recreation team for all their hard work! We could not be more proud.

I’m blessed beyond deserving to work with the best public servants throughout the state! Riley King was recognized this year as the APRA Young Professional of the Year. She deserves every bit of recognition and more for the way she responds to community needs and advances our dept, her co-workers, City of Apache Junction and our profession. I’m so proud to have known her all these years! Gary Gartner and his Parent-Tot Sports program also took home APRA’s 2024 Outstanding Sports Program Award. One of the best programs I got to do with my youngest when he was little. Love this team! Thank you Arizona Parks and Recreation Association for a great conference!

What are prospectors, and why are they such an important part of Apache Junction's history? 🏜️ Long before Apache Junction became the vibrant community we know today, prospectors were searching for gold near the base of the Superstition Mountain in the late 1860s. By the 1880s, they were working small gold outcrops in and around Goldfield Wash (Weeks Wash). These early adventurers left a lasting legacy, which is why we have so many landmarks named after them—like Prospector Park. It's also why our kids at Apache Junction High School proudly carry the name “Prospectors”! 🏆 The Prospector symbolizes our city’s rich history and pioneering spirit, reminding us of the determination and resilience that helped shape Apache Junction. Let’s continue to honor this legacy as we look towards a bright future! 🌟
