The Climate Finance Solutions team and I are extremely proud to be working with incredible innovators like Noah McQueen who are doing critical climate work! This honor is so well-deserved. It's also fun to see Noah's name popping up all over the place in the literature, even unrelated to the work we're doing for Heirloom. I should also mention that Noah is a very pleasant and all-around good person, which isn't always mentioned in these article, but merits being shared!
I'm honored to share that I’ve been named one of MIT Technology Review’s 2024 Innovators Under 35! 🎉 I’m incredibly grateful to be recognized alongside so many amazing individuals who are using technology to drive meaningful change and tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. A huge thank you to MIT Technology Review for this honor, and to everyone who has supported me on this journey.

Excited to be co-hosting this pitch event on first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects at NY Climate Week, since identifying the best ways to execute, fund, and otherwise support companies and projects at this stage is such a critical (and growing) need in the ecosystem. Tuesday, Sep 24th from 6-10pm in NYC - apply to attend here: https://lu.ma/jj6eumwo Thanks to Deanna Zhang and Jack Fritzinger for putting this together, as well as the fantastic companies pitching and the other amazing co-hosts and judges. Companies include Tandem PV, Anovion Technologies, Heirloom (CFS client!), Cemvita Inc., and Living Ink . Co-hosts, aside from myself and Ross Kornberg at Climate Finance Solutions, include The Schmidt Family Foundation, Trellis Climate, Fluor Corporation, Technip Energies, New Energy Risk, Khasma Capital (fka Nexus Development Capital), and JF Strategies.
So excited to co-host the very first ✨FOAK PITCH NIGHT✨ at NYCW in a few weeks where five companies will pitch FOAK projects to a panel of FOAK investors and service providers, which will give feedback LIVE. This is a little bit of a FOAK in itself. We normally use VC criteria in VC-oriented pitch events but FOAK is a different animal. We're hoping that the room can get a sense of: 1) What makes for a good FOAK project? and 2) What criteria should we use to evaluate these FOAK pitches? Shoutout to our amazing companies: Tandem PV, Anovion Technologies, Heirloom, Cemvita Inc., and Living Ink - representing a wide variety of FOAK projects and technologies. Thanks to our co-hosts - many of whom will also be on our "judging" panel - The Schmidt Family Foundation (who we first brainstormed this idea with), Climate Finance Solutions, Trellis Climate, Fluor Corporation, Technip Energies, New Energy Risk, Khasma Capital (fka Nexus Development Capital) - and to my co-organizer, Jack Fritzinger at JF Strategies. Congratulations to CFS client Switch Bioworks, Tim Schnabel, and the rest of the team on closing their $17M Seed round! This funding will enable Switch to continue its important and innovative work to decarbonize fertilizer and the agriculture system. Excited to see where this takes this critical climate solution!
Thrilled to announce that we have raised a $17M Series Seed round for Switch Bioworks! Thank you so much to our passionate and caring team – the Switchforce – who have been pushing the cutting edge of sustainable fertilizer R&D forward every day over the last 2+ years. I am humbled that I get to learn from such a high caliber group of biotech experts, who have assembled from every continent on Earth (except Antarctica :) around our mission of feeding the world sustainably. Thank you also to our incredible advisors for sharing your expertise and decades of experience from industry and academia spanning go-to-market, fermentation & formulation, IP, regulatory, people operations, and more. Your insights and mentorship are core to building our multi-disciplinary strategy. And, last but certainly not least: thank you so much to our dedicated investors, both existing and new, for supporting and guiding our team and mission. This round was led by Change Forces Capital, the new spinout climate fund from King Philanthropies, and joined by Grantham Foundation, Astanor Ventures, Acre Venture Partners, Anthos Capital, Thia Ventures, Emerson Collective, as well as the farmer-led Ag Ventures Alliance and others. The ten hottest years on record have all been in the last ten years, highlighting the urgent need to decarbonize our global economy quickly. Nitrogen fertilizer leads to over a gigaton of CO2 equivalent emissions every year – that’s about the same as all the cars in the US. At Switch, we engineer symbiotic, nitrogen-fixing microbes that live on plant roots to replace conventional fertilizer, a solution that is carbon-neutral and lower-cost for farmers. We now embark on completing product development of our first carbon-neutral biological nitrogen fertilizer, including initial scale-up fermentation and formulation as well as greenhouse and field trials in the US and internationally. Stay tuned and join us in being defiantly optimistic about the future! Full press release: https://lnkd.in/grZ8rkFv? Axios exclusive: https://lnkd.in/g6yx7GDz? We are excited to announce that our client, Prabhu Energy Labs, has secured $10M from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Fossil Energy and Carbon Management to mitigate vented and flared methane emissions from oil and gas operations. The project aims to eliminate natural gas flaring at oil production sites by converting otherwise wasted natural gas into value-added products. Specifically, Prabhu Energy Labs will develop and test the Oxiperator, a patented high-temperature heat exchanger, at oil/gas well sites in the Green River Basin, Wyoming and other locations to utilize energy from gases currently being flared or vented. This initiative will help reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions like methane that contribute significantly to climate change. We are so happy to see Navajo Power Home getting the recognition it deserves for the incredible work that they are doing to increase energy resilience and climate justice on the Navajo Nation! Our team here at CFS is honored to have supported the $5M DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations grant that Navajo Power Home won to expand their solution to provide power to 400 additional homes and continue to demonstrate its replicable model.
Navajo Power Home is all over my feed today-- and I hope it's all over yours, too! Here's a recap of what we celebrated today: ✨ We announced a monumental partnership with Qcells North America, the best (IMHO) manufacturer of solar panels in the USA. Qcells made a contribution of 1000+ panels to NPH allowing us to install our first ever #AmericanMade PV panels. I cannot send enough thank yous Marta Stoepker, Kelly Weger, Mark Sokolove, and Megan Phillips for your tireless work to make this happen and to elevate our story. ✨ We celebrated this partnership together with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and got to welcome amazing leaders from the DOE-- Wahleah Johns (Director of the Office of Indian Energy Programs and Policy), Jigar Shah (DOE Loan Programs Director), and David Turk (Deputy Secretary of Energy)-- along with Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, EdD, MBA to an NPH customer's home and to our warehouse ✨ To top it off, the Deputy Secretary himself announced our $5M award from the DOE Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations to provide power to 400 additional homes! The highlight of all of this, though, was watching our spectacular team members Chanse Foster (General Manager) and Jeremy Begay (Service Technician) give speeches and shine in the company of these important clean energy and government leaders. These two inspire me every day and I am so proud of how far they've come. 🌠 And more to come-- tomorrow I'll share the EPIC "Faces of Clean Energy" videos on Navajo Power Home that were released this morning by Clean Energy for America.

Congratulations to our client Molten Industries for securing a $5.4M grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)! This grant will enable Molten Industries to spearhead a joint project with US Steel and CPFD Software to design, develop and test a pilot-scale system aimed at eliminating carbon emissions from iron reduction. "This collaboration with U.S. Steel and CPFD Software is an exciting first step in Molten’s mission to decarbonize the world’s heavy industries,” said Kevin Bush, CEO, Molten Industries. “Our process delivers hydrogen at high temperatures required for ironmaking and steelmaking, saving energy and cost for steel manufacturers. We are confident that our joint efforts will pave the way for a future where carbon-neutral steel production is not just a possibility but a reality." We are excited to be part of the effort to decarbonize heavy industry and transportation! #ClimateGrants #NonDilutiveFunding #DOE #Grants
The majority of steel today is made with coal, resulting in about 8% of global CO2 emissions. Today Molten Industries is announcing a project with United States Steel Corporation and CPFD Software supported by a $5.4M U.S. Department of Energy grant to integrate Molten's clean hydrogen production process with a pilot scale direct reduced iron system. Hydrogen from Molten's process can lead to net-zero steel, producing water instead of carbon dioxide. Steel is a core pillar in Molten's mission to decarbonize heavy industry and transportation, and I'm excited to work with Brenda Petrilena and the U. S. Steel team to push this technology forward! Many thanks to the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, especially Tomas Green and Rebecca Erwin for the support! Thank you also the Peter Blaser and James Parker from CPFD for their work to model this system, and thank you to Joel Armin-Hoiland and the Climate Finance Solutions team and Brian Ormsby and the Pantheon Solutions team for their help in preparing an excellent proposal. Finally, a thank you to our investors and supporters who have enabled this technology to scale from the lab to pilot - Breakthrough Energy , Sozo Ventures, Union Square Ventures, Fifty Years, J4.Ventures, Moai Capital, UVC Partners, Jane Woodward, Mark Heising, and Peter Attia. Kevin Bush, myself, and the Molten team are stoked to build!
