Not long ago, Director of Historical Research, Peter Inker, took a few of our ambassadors to Poitiers, France to attend the Omohundro Institute of Early American History & Culture (OI)’s 27th Annual Conference, “Vast Early America: A Transcontinental Conversation” - the first annual conference outside the Western Hemisphere since 2001. During their visit, they participated in conversations between early Americanists on both sides of the Atlantic, with the goal of uncovering points where respective approaches to the field have diverged and carving out new paths forward that better integrate the insights and contributions of a wider range of early Americanist. Welcome home from your time abroad! 👏 Pictured (left to right): Russell Reed, Stephen Seals, and Fallon Burner.

“That the future may learn from the past.”
About us
Established in 1926, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is the not-for-profit educational institution that preserves and operates the restored 18th-century capital of Virginia as a town-sized living history museum, telling the inspirational stories of our nation’s founding men and women. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is the largest outdoor living history museum in the world. The mission of the Foundation is “that the future may learn from the past.” In addition to the historic area itself, the Colonial Williamsburg Company Hospitality Group operates a world-class resort to accommodate one million visitors annually. Among the many properties in the rich portfolio of offerings is the flagship of the Hospitality Group, The Williamsburg Inn. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Hospitality Group also operates three other hotels and 10 restaurants including four 18th-century taverns in the center of the Historic Area. Rounding out The Foundation are The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg: The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. Williamsburg is located in Virginia’s Tidewater region, 20 minutes from Newport News, within an hour’s drive of Richmond and Norfolk, and 150 miles south of Washington, D.C., off Interstate 64.

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is deeply saddened by the passing of Colin G. Campbell, former president and CEO of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, who passed away at the age of 88. His 14-year tenure was marked by his compassion for teaching not only history as part of the Foundation’s mission, but also citizenship. Alongside receiving Colonial Williamsburg’s Churchill Bell award in 2014, Campbell also worked to fund the 65,000-square-foot expansion of the Colonial Williamsburg Art Museums. He will be deeply missed.
