The work we do is hard, and we spend a lot of time focused on what we can do to improve each time. But it's equally as important to reflect, enjoy, and celebrate each success, both big and small. With that in mind we'd like to highlight the completion of a huge milestone project. Under the leadership of Superintendent Jason Turner, our trades and support departments put their best foot forward and closed out one of our largest contracts yet. The RDM-4 Shipping Port has departed and is enroute back to its home. Congratulations to our team and thank you to all involved! #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #AJobWellDone #ThankYou
About us
We are Colonna's. Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. is a diversified industrial company, with multiple divisions and affiliates delivering the highest quality ship repair, machining, and steel fabrication services to both the commercial and government markets. Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. is located in the historic Berkley section of Norfolk, Virginia and is the oldest continuous family owned and operated private shipyard in the United States. Founded in 1875 by Charles J. Colonna, a 26 year old ship carpenter with limited resources, the early business was limited to pier-side repairs. Within 2 years, Charles had added his first marine railway powered by two horses that had a lift capacity of about 40 tons, and he was off and running. Although over 140 years old, Colonna’s Shipyard continues to maintain its commitment to modernization, making the capital investments necessary for improvements in efficiency and productivity. Today, Colonna’s is a diverse industrial company with extensive capabilities in commercial and government ship repair, machining and large steel fabrication. Colonna’s strength is our employees. We employ the best and the brightest in the shipyard industry and we are proud of all that they do. From welders and ship fitters to government contract specialists, we have the right people in place to make sure the job is completed to the highest standards. Respect~ Pride ~ Truth ~ Family These are our CORE VALUES and the guidelines that make us a leader in our industry. We are pleased and confident in stating that our skilled employees are among the most respected experts in the ship repair industry. Colonna’s Shipyard and our affiliates are pleased to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. EOE/M/F/DISABILITY/VET

A little over a week ago, Colonna’s employees came together for the annual Company Picnic, a cherished event that embodies our Company Value of Family. This gathering offered everyone a chance to enjoy each other’s company, savor delicious food, and take a well-deserved break from the demands of everyday operations. Employees enjoyed a variety of dishes, including pulled pork BBQ, chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, and more. The picnic concluded with awards and a raffle, adding an extra touch of excitement to the day. #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #AnnualPicnic Steel America Weld America

In our ongoing commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of our Company grounds and the surrounding Berkley neighborhood, this past Saturday, a group of our leaders collaborated with the Beacon Light Civic League and C.L.E.A.N. for Berkley C.L.E.A.N Day. C.L.E.A.N. is a youth mentoring organization that encourages young people to engage with their community and foster positive change. We had a fantastic time and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with the local community! #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #CommunityMatters #BerkleyNorfolk #Clean #FosterPositiveChange

We can’t think of a better way to kick off National Safety Month than with a company-wide Safety Summit! Employees paused normal operations last Thursday to refresh their safety knowledge, receive safety-related Company updates, and explore the latest tools and equipment that support safe operations. Employees demonstrated our pillar of success – Safety is Everyone’s Job – by participating in a yard and neighborhood clean-up, group training sessions, rotating safety demonstrations, and a safety stand-down brief led by our leadership. A huge thanks to Grainger and 3M for hosting this event, Chris Marsh for coordinating, and to our booth participants: Milwaukee Tool, DEWALT, MAZELLA PROCESS INDUSTRIES, and BlastOne International. #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #SafetySummit #SafetyIsEveryonesJob #AllTheTime #NationalSafetyMonth Steel America Weld America

Colonna's Shipyard reposted this
For Sandra Spriggs, Colonna’s Shipyard’s longtime Toolroom & Storeroom Supervisor (also a Berkley, Norfolk native), there is nothing more important than Family - a Company value that she holds close to her heart. Over 40 years ago, after seeing an ad in the local paper, Sandra found her home here and has never looked back. Over the years, she has not only seen Colonna’s business grow, but also its culture. When Sandra began working at Colonna’s, she was one of only four female employees at the yard. With a predominantly male workforce, she asserted that the yard was also a “woman’s place” and she has seen it become home to many female employees over the years. She also respects the Company for being a 2nd chance employer and allowing people the opportunity to start anew. Sandra stated her most cherished memories are of my grandad, the late Mr. Colonna, walking with him around the yard, seeing his vision, plant meetings, watching the family grow, and at times, being pranked by him. She grew close to our family, especially my aunt, the late Karen Colonna, whom she called her best friend. Although Sandra retires from Colonna’s today, a piece of her stays here. In our West Yard sits a vital part of our daily operations - a Manitowoc Lattice-Boom Crawler Crane – that has been named Sandra in her honor. To Sandra, this is the highest honor she could have received because “cranes are named after family.” Thank you, Sandra, for being a great employee, mentor, and leader but most of all, thank you for being a part of our Colonna’s Family. We wish you an exciting, but restful, retirement! #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #WomenInTrades #Leader #30PlusYearsMakingShipHappen

Thank you to the Virginia Ship Repair Association for this opportunity and Kendall Goodin for representing!
We are so grateful for the volunteers who help share our industry. This week, Kendall Goodin from Colonna's Shipyard participated in the 32nd Annual Career Expo sponsored by the CTE Advisory Council and Suffolk Public Schools. Held at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront, the event featured approximately 36 area businesses providing interviews for Career and Technical Education students, and we were blessed to be one of them. Kendall dedicated time to talk to the students about the opportunities within our industry and its importance. These students represent the future of our industry and national security. When VSRA is present at these events, we show students about the opportunities they have and the importance of our industry. These students are the future of our industry and national security. #CareerExpo #VA #HamptonRoads #ShipRepair #Suffolk
