Meet Sanjar Qiam! Sanjar Qiam is an Afghan British maker, storyteller and entrepreneur based in Brighton, UK. He started in the media and cultural industry in Afghanistan and moved to making and building after immigrating to the UK. He renovates houses, runs Afghan kite making workshops around the UK and has set up a charity to support refugees. Sanjar also organises makers' groups for adults to design and craft material intended for daily use. Inspired by the art and craft movement, he emphasises practicality and fun in making. Why does he believe in CAN? "When I was first introduced to CAN 2 years ago and met some of the most amazing people on the planet. We forged friendships from our shared ideas, sentiments and interests. They have been a source of inspiration, a flame for my effort and a beacon of virtue. I feel CAN is my lost tribe of compassionate and soulful creatives seeking to mend neglects and heal our sorrows. A community of artists who listen and then pull at my heart, make my belly laugh, my eyes widen and my brain tick. It's the place where I find something both familiar and foreign. We all need a place to show up as our authentic self and CAN can be that place; where it permeates all the artificial boundaries of race, borders language and gender. Reflecting our passion for art, beauty and love." #communityartsnetwork #arts #socialimpact #socialchange

The amazing sound of the world’s youth playing as one! Organised by CAN member, Carnegie Hall, World Orchestra Week (WOW!) gathered more than 700 teen musicians from across the globe in New York City for a historic celebration of international youth orchestras from over 40 countries. The Afghan Youth Orchestra, Africa United Youth Orchestra, Beijing Youth Orchestra and National Children’s Symphony of Venezuela were among the orchestras that participated in extraordinary performance led by world renowned conductor, Gustavo Dudamel. WOW! wasn’t just performances. CAN member and our research partner, Professor Heddy Lahmann, PhD was part of the event. She led the development and facilitation of cultural exchange workshops for the young musicians, which were focused on a 'Wish for Our World.' Students shared and exchanged their wishes for the world’s future through theatre, music, and visual art activities. All this was done with the Education and Social Impact team at Carnegie Hall, including Sarah Johnson, Doug Beck, and Sam Livingston. Our Senior Artistic Advisor, Yazmany Arboleda also supported facilitation of the cultural exchange workshops and created the visual and tactile arts elements to tell the story of the many wishes the young musicians expressed.    Enjoy these few glimpses from the event! What’s your wish for the world? Share with us in the comments! #communityartsnetwork #arts #socialchange #socialimpact #carnegiemellon #NewYorkmusic #NewYork #NewYorkevents #GustavoDudamel

Festivales Solidarios emerged because of the October 4th massacre in Totonicapán, Guatemala in 2012, resulting from the need to organise and heal this state violence. They are an experimental hub of communication, anti-colonial art and popular environmental education, led by indigenous women and formed by artists, communicators, community activists and journalists who provide methodologies to the people that support the fight against climate crisis, criminalization and to preserve historical memory. The organisation's work values are built on solidarity, mutual support, self-management, respect and cooperativism. Festivales Solidarios accompanies communities of indigenous and mestizo grassroots organisations that are building alternatives to climate change and extractivism that destroys our Mother Earth in different regions of Guatemala and Mesoamerica. They do this through indigenous and community communication, art and diverse festivals, and educational initiatives to break the media siege and misinformation. #communityartsnetwork #arts #socialimpact #socialchange
