The City of Avondale Estates Curbside Composting Pilot Program is off to a strong start! The 420+ residents participating in this free, USDA-funded program have diverted 10,942 pounds of food scraps in the first six weeks! The compost created through this program will be returned to Food Well Alliance and Roots Down who will distribute it to BIPOC growers in DeKalb County and support edible landscapes and local library gardens. I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with LIFECYCLE BUILDING CENTER - Shannon Goodman and Blaine Burris, MSW to plan Revel in Reuse, their annual fundraiser. This will be a zero-waste event. All food scraps, organic waste, and compostable materials will be picked up by CompostNow Crazy fun fact, we'll actually be saving money by doing this! We're excited to be partnering with Melanie Styles to host the event at Atlanta Utility Works, accessible by MARTA! Will you join us to support LBC's mission to keep usable building materials out of the landfill to provide positive community impact? Your ticket supports their work, and you can see exactly where your support goes. Hope to see you there! #event #zerowaste #deconstruction #community #nonprofit #sustainability Elizabeth Young Sam Opdenbosch, NCIDQ Uchenna Romaine Tyler Thompson Marina de Chatillon Brent Dawson Thomas Harriman Lyle D Gladney, CFM, FMP, CPMM Diana Robinson-Sinkford Toni Williams Leah Crawford, RPA, MSRE Brandi Lovell Kmoch Amy Stone Lawrence Gellerstedt Fred “Billy” Holder, CFM Emily Levinson Meredith Campbell Leslie Falzone Chrissy Smith Nicole Matthews Small - NCIDQ, LEED, WellAP Pierluca Maffey - Architect, OAR, Int. Without supporting infrastructure and resources, food waste bans are more likely to fail. A great article by Fast Company on the key factors in the success of Massachusetts' food waste ban. "Other states could follow Massachusetts’s lead and get food waste producers to comply with bans, he adds—if they’re willing to invest the resources to build up their composting network and enforcement protocols. “You hear a lot of ‘more versus less’ regulation, and that’s not what it comes down to,” he says. “It comes down to better-supported versus not-supported regulation.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/g3htSJGv

Developing strong partnerships with organizations like Food Well Alliance has played a critical role in the success of our community and grant-funded efforts in Georgia. As a nonprofit, they support a network of local urban farmers and, alongside the Atlanta Regional Commission, created the City Agriculture Plan, which has influenced several cities to consider or implement plans that support local food systems and their necessary components, such as composting. Food Well Alliance has helped our team facilitate the return of finished compost to local growers, with over 1.5 million pounds of compost distributed across 40 local growers in the past two years. Their commitment to growing #composting infrastructure and programming, along with their dedication to providing resources to growers in Metro Atlanta, has significantly contributed to the success of CompostNow's mission to reduce food waste and rebuild soil health. Composting in isolation is not a comprehensive solution. Building relationships with groups like Food Well Alliance helps us ensure that this vital soil amendment reaches the hands of local growers, fostering a broader ecosystem-level change that is truly #impactful. Below is a post from a community farmer and her experience with a compost delivery she received from our CompostNow Georgia Facility earlier this year! #closingtheloop

Help us congratulate Bobbie on her 7-year Workiversary at CompostNow! 🎉 If you’ve ordered product from us in the past 7 years you’ve likely crossed paths with our Inventory Specialist, Bobbie! Bobbie manages and coordinates inventory across our markets and has worked directly with product members. She’s a consistent, detail-oriented, and delightful team member to work alongside. When she’s not at CompostNow, Bobbie loves spending time outdoors with friends and family, and is one of our resident long-distance runners (yes, she’s completed a marathon)! We’re grateful for all you do, Bobbie! Thanks for 7 years with us!

🌱 CHECK OUT THIS ARTICLE!! https://lnkd.in/gJEVvf6N Excited to be part of the CompostNow pilot program in Avondale Estates! 🌱 As a long-time advocate for healthy soils, I’m thrilled to see this initiative taking root. D6 in DeKalb is starting our compost canvassing soon, so proud to be a part of Team Ted Terry to spread the word on this very important work! This all reminds me of my farming days when compost was LIFE. Diverting food waste from landfills isn’t just sustainable—it’s essential for capturing carbon and revitalizing our urban soils. Proud that Roots Down is involved and SO proud to help deliver many yards of compost that the City of Avondale Estates has produced to the DeKalb County libraries! Let’s keep growing!

🎉 Shout out to Marcus Albert on his recent promotion to Sprinter Driver Supervisor! Marcus joined CompostNow four years ago as a Sprinter Driver. Despite it being his first driving role, he quickly became one of our most accurate drivers, with the fewest route mistakes and the highest praise from customers and team members. Since joining the team, Marcus has personally 🍎 collected 877,542 pounds of food waste (from 89,702 containers) and 🌱 delivered 185,325 pounds of compost to members! Marcus has played a vital role in onboarding new drivers, coaching the team through mistakes, and spearheading new initiatives in Atlanta like Hard-to-Recycle Services and the Avondale Estates Curbside Composting Program! We’re grateful to work alongside exceptional teammates like Marcus and are excited to see him grow in his new role!
