CSIS today announced the appointment of Navin Girishankar as President of its newly established Economic Security & Technology Department. Girishankar brings to CSIS decades of experience in government, business, and international finance, serving most recently as senior counselor to the Deputy Secretary of Commerce on a range of domestic and international issues. He previously served in senior commercial roles at Bridgewater Associates and spent over two decades at the World Bank in senior policy, country, finance, and evaluation positions. The Economic Security and Technology Department will bring together nearly a dozen CSIS programs to offer in-depth research on economic and technology policies crucial to U.S. national security. Core focus areas will include: · AI and semiconductors · Energy security and climate transition · Critical minerals · Digital, quantum, and cybersecurity technologies · Trade and investment policies · Intellectual property and innovation ecosystems · Economic relations with China and economic alliances with global partner The department will convene political, business, and thought leaders to tackle the complex economic security and technology issues facing the U.S. and its allies. The department’s creation is part of a broader strategic realignment of CSIS programming, to be formally launched this fall, to better prepare the institution to meet global challenges in the coming decades. Navin shared his vision: “I’m honored to lead CSIS’s work on economic security and technology at a critical moment. The United States and its allies are in the midst of a must-win global technology and commercial competition. It is imperative that we take a hard look at our technology capabilities and vulnerabilities relative to others, including China; modernize our economic and technology policy toolkit; and rethink our approach to public-private collaboration at home and economic alliances around the world.” For more details and to read Navin Girishankar’s full bio, visit our website: https://cs.is/4cP2v1p

About us
Established in Washington, D.C., over 60 years ago, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a bipartisan, nonprofit policy research organization dedicated to providing strategic insights and policy solutions to help decisionmakers chart a course toward a better world. Founded in 1962 by David M. Abshire and Admiral Arleigh Burke, CSIS is one of the world’s preeminent international policy institutions focused on defense and security; geoeconomics and technology; Asia and other regional studies; and transnational challenges ranging from energy and climate to global health policy and food & water security. For nine consecutive years, CSIS was named the world's number one think tank for international security by the University of Pennsylvania's “Go To Think Tank Index.” The Center’s over 275 full-time staff and large network of affiliated scholars conduct research and analysis and develop policy initiatives that look to the future and anticipate change. CSIS is regularly called upon by Congress, the executive branch, the media, and others to explain the day’s events and offer recommendations to improve U.S. strategy. In late 2015, Thomas J. Pritzker was named chairman of the CSIS Board of Trustees. Mr. Pritzker succeeded former U.S. senator Sam Nunn (D-GA), who chaired the CSIS Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2015. CSIS is led by John J. Hamre, who has served as president and chief executive officer since 2000. "Russia and Iran are selective in their engagement with countries in LAC. While they cultivate close ties with the hemisphere’s three anti-U.S. dictatorships—Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela—they simultaneously work to gain ground in more neutral or U.S.-skeptical countries."
