Together with partners, our team published a new analysis in eClinicalMedicine – The Lancet Discovery Science that shows that eliminating out-of-pocket costs for blood pressure medication reduces risk of heart attack, stroke, and hospitalization.   More on what we found: —Even small copayments reduce medication adherence and increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and hospitalizations —In one study reviewed, patients receiving free medications were more than twice as likely to achieve blood pressure control as those paying out-of-pocket  —Providing free medications can be a life-saver and a cost-saver, reducing hospitalizations and overall health system expenses.   Thank you to the Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia, Thailand IHPP, and National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh for your contributions to this important analysis. 📢 Latest Content Alert!!!   Efficacy and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitors in elderly patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis A recent Systematic Review and Meta Analysis by Jiacheng Ya et al covered 35 phase 3 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 9788 patients and 64 real-world studies involving 37,111 patients. Results from phase 3 RCTs revealed that ICIs significantly improved OS (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.78, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.74–0.82) and progression-free survival (PFS) (HR = 0.67, 95% CI: 0.60–0.75) compared to chemotherapy. 🌟 New Article 🌟 Hospitalisations and length of stays in women with endometriosis: a data linkage prospective cohort study. A recent study by Dereje Gete et al at the The University of Queensland, including over 13000 women shows that women with endometriosis were more likely to be admitted to hospitals compared to those without the condition. Also, post-diagnosis, women experienced more hospitalisations and more days in hospital compared to their pre-diagnosis. Consistent findings were found for women with surgically confirmed or clinically suspected endometriosis. I am excited to share the publication of our latest research: "An Interpretable Machine Learning Tool for In-Home Monitoring of Agitation Episodes in People Living with Dementia: A Proof-of-Concept Study." by eClinicalMedicine – The Lancet Discovery Science! In this study, we developed an interpretable machine learning-powered tool to monitor the occurrence of agitation episodes in patients living with dementia. Key insights: Using explainability techniques, we identified factors related to agitation episodes, including: 🔷 Sleep Patterns: Increased alertness and reduced respiratory rate during sleep. 🔷 Light Quality: Poor lighting conditions. 🔷 Ambient Temperature: Lower evening/night temperatures. We propose a user-friendly interface that enables clinicians to: 🔶 Easily upload patient data for patient weekly monitoring. 🔶 Simulate personalised non-pharmacological interventions (e.g., adjusting lighting, temperature) using adjustable sliders. 🔶 Download the appropriate adjustments for seamless and efficient care planning. Our proposed tool provides a continuous, objective monitoring solution that has the potential to enhance patient care, promote personalised solutions and support carers.
