Congratulations to ESP board member & Springboard To Opportunities CEO Aisha Nyandoro on being named to TIME's #TIME100Next list! Her leadership with The Magnolia Mother’s Trust showed what happens when we invest directly in mothers and trust them to know what their families need. She’s showing that #guaranteedincome isn’t just an idea—it’s a real solution that gives family choices and creates economic stability. As she explains, guaranteed income is the “answer and solution to what our communities need most, and that is cash in their pockets to address the income disparities that exist.” So deserved, Aisha! 💐 Watch her interview below and check out her profile here: https://lnkd.in/ggh6RZfk

Why are teachers, nurses, and first responders paying a higher tax rate than billionaires and megacorporations? Our tax code is set up to benefit the 1% at the expense of the middle class and working families but we have an opportunity to change that. Next week’s election will have far-reaching consequences, ushering in a new slate of leaders who will either restore fairness in the tax code or double down on today’s inequities. In 2017, Republicans’ Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) lowered the corporate income tax rate from 35% to 21%–the lowest since 1939. These massive tax breaks to corporations and the 1% came at a time when expenses for families like child care, housing, and groceries have gone up, further exacerbating inequality in our country. But what if we could redirect those billions in corporate tax breaks to families instead? Next year, the TCJA expires, giving us a critical opportunity to reform the tax code so it reflects the priorities of people, workers, and small businesses. Commonsense policy changes like strengthening the #ChildTaxCredit and #EarnedIncomeTaxCredit and implementing a graduated corporate tax rate will help create an equitable and inclusive tax system–one where families get cash back in their pockets and megacorporations and billionaires don’t double and triple their wealth. Why is the FTC's "click to cancel rule" so important? Neale Mahoney describes the powerful economic impact of confusing subscription systems: “When you’re not canceling a product you no longer want… [market] forces are blunted.”

October is #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth, a time to honor survivors and shed light on how financial instability often traps people in abusive relationships. One powerful tool to support survivors is #GuaranteedIncome, which can provide the financial stability needed to leave unsafe situations. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, financial abuse occurs in 99% of domestic violence cases. Abusers maintain control by limiting access to assets, withholding money for essential needs like housing, and making it nearly impossible for survivors to gain financial independence. Without financial security, many survivors are forced to stay or return to abusive partners. However, guaranteed income pilots like The City of Los Angeles's BIG:LEAP saw significant reductions in intimate partner violence, as participants were able to secure safe housing, provide for their children, and ultimately leave abusive situations. Given the success of BIG:LEAP, Los Angeles is now exploring a guaranteed income program specifically designed to support survivors of domestic violence, recognizing that financial independence is critical to breaking free from abuse and establishing long-term safety and stability. You can learn more about BIG:LEAP here: https://lnkd.in/gs4a9QGB If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, help is available. NEW: The Federal Trade Commission just announced a new, widely popular “click to cancel” rule that will require companies to make it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions–ensuring people don’t get tricked or trapped into spending their hard-earned money. #DirectFile is expanding to 24 states, providing 30 million Americans with the opportunity to file their taxes for free! PLUS, it’s now preloading some data—making tax filing easier and faster. "This is the first time the IRS is filling in data for you so that tax filing becomes simpler and quicker for people," explains ESP’s Adam Ruben. This marks the first step towards automatic tax returns in the U.S., something already common in nearly 50 countries around the world. As Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen notes, future versions of Direct File may use W-2s and other government data to fully prepopulate returns, further reducing the burden on taxpayers. https://lnkd.in/gwFmPKrf
