"There's a child care center in Virginia with a waitlist of over 400 kids. They can't afford to hire more early educators to fill those classrooms without raising costs for families. The only solution is federal funding" The shortage of affordable child care in the US is hurting our kids, workers, and economy. We need real solutions to build up our child care supply and create good paying jobs for early educators. Laura Valle-Gutierrez spoke with NewsNation about how we get there:

The bad news? Child care costs are still rising faster than inflation. The good news? There are proven ways to fix it. This new Century Foundation report outlines what’s working, based on learnings from some key states.
Did you know that child care now costs more than rent or a mortgage in almost every state in the nation? High prices, low supply, and underpaid early educators are persistent challenges—and signal the very broken market. The unstoppable Julie Kashen at The Century Foundation has put out a new report that looks into the impact one year after the child care cliff, when pandemic-relief investments to stabilize providers expired. This new report looks at New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin to shine a spotlight on the precarious state of child care in America, and the leadership needed to solve it. The Biden-Harris administration has taken a bold, equity-first approach to workforce development. By investing in job training and apprenticeship programs, the administration is working to ensure that historically marginalized communities and businesses have access to opportunities in emerging and high-demand sectors. Focusing on inclusive growth and delivering targeted interventions to underserved communities is how we build an economy that works for everyone. Today is Disabled Womens Equal Pay Day. In 2024, disabled women on average earn just half of what nondisabled men make. Black, Indigenous, and Latina women face even greater disparities. To close these gaps, we need to: • End workplace segregation • Eliminate subminimum wages • Reform public benefits that prevent disabled women from achieving economic independence • Collect better data on disability and pay equity—especially for multi-marginalized disabled individuals—across all levels of government Learn more: https://bit.ly/3B0l8kX

President Biden just announced a record $1.3 billion investment in HBCUs, bringing the administration's total investments to over $17 billion. Despite being shortchanged tens of billions in federal funding compared to predominantly white institutions, HBCUs remain powerful drivers of racial equity—producing 50% of Black teachers, 70% of Black doctors and dentists, and 80% of Black judges Investing in these institutions is not only the right thing to do—it’s popular policy: our latest polling with Morning Consult shows Americans want Congress to make sure that federal funding for HBCUs is equivalent to that given to other schools. Low wages and poor benefits are forcing passionate child care providers out of the field and into better-paying jobs. Families with young children are paying the price, stuck on months-long waitlists or unable to access child care at all. On NewsNation, Julie Kashen argues that addressing our child care crisis requires more than just expanding the Child Tax Credit. We need federal investment in child care and the early educators who care for our children. Watch the full interview: https://lnkd.in/g9bHYhJ4
