Last week, I briefed several Congressional offices and a House caucus in Washington D.C. representing education proposals from the Federation of American Scientists #AIPolicy Sprint via the #DayOne project. “Briefing Congress” was not on any list that I could imagine even just a few years ago, and I was so so grateful for the opportunity to represent all the amazing education proposals from the #DayOne cohort. We have a window on AI policy to do something meaningful before it moves, and several growing coalitions including TeachAI Pat Yongpradit and the EDSAFE AI Alliance Erin Mote are fighting for to make education a priority in these discussions. It serves as a comprehensive resource for product leads and their teams of innovators, designers, developers, customer-facing staff, and legal teams as they work toward safety, security, and trust while creating AI products and services for use in education.

Being on a panel with deeply thoughtful people is uplifting and one of the highlights of my work. Special thanks to Demetrius Daltirus for being a stellar organizer, Rajen Sheth for his safe and effective approach to AI in Education at Kyron Learning, and Dr. Bridget Burns for being an insightful leader in the space of university collaboration and AI integrations.

When ChatGPT was first released, everyone in AI was talking about the new generation of AI assistants. But over the past year, that excitement has turned to a new target: AI agents. Agents featured prominently in Google’s annual I/O conference in May, when the company unveiled its new AI agent called Astra, which allows users to interact with it using audio and video. OpenAI’s new GPT-4o model has also been called an AI agent. And it’s not just hype, although there is definitely some of that too. Tech companies are plowing vast sums into creating AI agents, and their research efforts could usher in the kind of useful AI we have been dreaming about for decades. Many experts, including Sam Altman, say they are the next big thing. But what are they, and how can we use them?

I took some time to reflect on my learnings from speaking with educational institutions about #AI implementation. My hope is that the key messages within arm leaders with human-first, practical ways to get everyone rowing in the right direction. 🛶 #education #learning #leadership #nonprofit #socialimpact
