Excited to launch our new program with Education at Work! Together, we’re launching a new program this fall that connects college students to careers in tax and accounting, and also helps Intuit open up new pathways to expand our talent pipeline. Last week, we were out in Tempe, AZ on site to visit with students where I got a chance to share my personal story and career journey, in hopes of inspiring students and helping them navigate their career path. This has been an area I’ve been passionate about since I joined Intuit. It started as just an idea and persistence to pursue it. It’s amazing what we can accomplish when missions are aligned and we partner with the right people. Looking forward to what’s to come! 🔑 One of the keys to early career success for both students and their employers, is work-based learning experience. As Strada Education Foundation highlighted in recent research, senior college students who participated in internships are more confident in their ability to communicate their skills and experiences to potential employers than those who have not participated in internships. And, studies from National Association of Colleges and Employers show that employers are more likely to hire and retain workers who have previously completed internships. This Fortune article highlights a glaring symptom of our broken college to career system. 😮 “More than half of hiring managers have come to the conclusion that college grads are unprepared for the world of work. Meanwhile, over 20% say they can’t handle the workload.” “In reality, colleges know that their students are wholly unprepared for the workforce—and some have started stepping up to fill the gap.” Education at Work partners with institutions and businesses to match college talent to immediate business needs and build diverse pipelines. The benefits are numerous but one of the top ones, for both students and employers? Retention. 🎯 90% of Education at Work students hired by corporate partners remain on staff one year later. Work-based learning is critical for students to develop the skills, attitude, and experience necessary to thrive in careers. And, companies get better workers. But too many students are locked out of internships, co-ops, and other work-based learning opportunities that would propel their careers due to financial barriers and other factors. Research shows that internships and work-based learning programs have significant positive benefits for students and employers. So what keeps companies from scaling these opportunities and expanding access? 🎯 Operational capacity. In a recent Business-Higher Education Forum report, "Expanding Internships: Harnessing Employer Insights To Boost Opportunity and Enhance Learning," nearly half of the 2,962 employers surveyed cited operational challenges such as finding qualified candidates and identifying tasks at the appropriate level for interns as a factor discouraging them from starting or expanding internships. 💡Our innovative model removes the operational burden on the employer -- we recruit, hire, train, and manage college student workers in their roles with our corporate partners. Rethinking the approach to internships and leveraging new types of partnerships between businesses and higher education can help close the gaps in the college to career pipeline.
