Bringing hope and ending the victimization and exploitation of sexual assault through prevention, recovery, and advocacy
About us
The Elizabeth Smart Foundation is dedicated to bringing hope and ending the victimization and exploitation of sexual assault through prevention, recovery, and advocacy. The case of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most-followed kidnapping cases of our time. For nine months, Elizabeth endured daily sexual assault, starvation, and abuse. In 2011, years after her rescue, Elizabeth founded the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, dedicated to the fight against sexual violence in all forms. Help us in our mission to support survivors and end sexual violence. Learn more here - elizabethsmartfoundation.org/get-involved. OUR PROJECTS Smart Defense: A self-defense training course designed specifically for women and girls ages 12 and up. We customized the Smart Defense curriculum to contain effective moves from Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Muay Thai, as well as effective sexual assault education pieces. The program was designed to help women and girls feel empowered and able to protect themselves. Smart Talks: A podcast with survivor stories, healing techniques, and education from experts in this field. It was designed to provide supporters and survivors with tools for healing, a sense of community, and empowerment so we can all move forward together. We Believe You: Our November campaign, designed to answer one of the top things we hear from survivors, "nobody believes me." As people across the world participate in #WeBelieveYou, we open up ties in every friendship circle, family, neighborhood, and community where victims can turn for help. This past weekend at our first annual Women's Ranch Retreat Fundraiser, we shared powerful and essential conversations around the generational impact of sexual abuse. Healing starts by confronting these issues head-on, and together, we can make a lasting difference. We also want to give a special shout out to the Elizabeth Smart Foundation Smart Defense team, Elizabeth Smart, our corporate sponsors, and the women who attended the retreat. Thank you for making this amazing weekend possible!

We're stronger together!
How widespread is sexual exploitation? It encompasses issues including sex trafficking, sextortion, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, and child sexual abuse material. What are we doing to combat these issues? PHASE stands for Prevention and Healing Against Sexual Exploitation—and that’s exactly what we do. Together, our three organizations (Fight the New Drug, Elizabeth Smart Foundation, and the Malouf Foundation) form a progressive channel of programs to fight sexual exploitation in all its forms. Learn more about our 12 programs aimed to radically reduce victimization from sexual exploitation at phasealliance.org.

Did you know we offer Smart Defense classes and seminars for businesses? You can host a full four-week program, a weekend seminar, or provide full access to our online training, Smart Defense+. Smart Defense is a holistic self-defense training program that emphasizes the education surrounding sexual violence prevention–in addition to the martial arts techniques used for defense and escape. Elizabeth Smart started Smart Defense to empower individuals everywhere to defend themselves using their strength and voices. Your employees will LOVE the benefits! 🔹Great team-building activity 👫🤝 🔹New skills and sense of empowerment 💪✨ 🔹Boost in mental health and overall well-being 🌟🧠 What businesses are saying: “First Colony Mortgage has greatly valued its partnership with Smart Defense. Witnessing the profound impact on women all over, who benefit from the program's opportunities for learning and personal growth, has been truly rewarding. Equally important is the direct benefit to our own female employees, who have gained invaluable skills and confidence through this initiative. Smart Defense not only empowers women but also educates them on awareness, self-protection, and self-defense in challenging situations." - First Colony Mortgage "When introduced to the Smart Defense program, to me, it was a no brainer opportunity to offer our employees. All aspects that are taught, from the physical and awareness skills to the psychological and recovery skills, this program readies participants for anything that may come their way. The Smart Defense staff are highly qualified with their martial arts background, but more importantly their passion to help and protect others. Employees that participated, increased in confidence, and developed lasting relationships with each other." - USANA Health Sciences “The Elizabeth Smart Foundation delivered an outstanding program, teaching our employees self-defense techniques and enhancing their confidence. Miyo and her team were exceptional, ensuring everyone felt comfortable. We highly recommend this program.” - Las Vegas Valley Water District Contact our program director, Miyo Strong, at miyo@elizabethsmartfoundation.org to learn more or to set up a training. #sexualviolenceprevention #selfdefense #elizabethsmartfoundation #smartdefense
