The first-ever San Quentin Film Festival was the brainchild of Emerson Collective Fellow Rahsaan Thomas, who was formerly incarcerated at San Quentin, and Cori Thomas, a longtime volunteer in the San Quentin Media Center. Rahsaan Thomas works to ensure the creative community inside the prison has access to professionals and opportunities on the outside. He is not only amplifying incarcerated voices, but challenging society’s assumptions about people in prison. https://lnkd.in/dCr6-XJ6

Imagine energy so inexpensive and abundant that everyone would have it. Commonwealth Fusion Systems will use tokamaks to generate fusion energy. Fusion is emissions-free and can release 7 million times more energy than fossil fuel—yes, 7 million more times. CFS power plants could be the last new energy source the world needs. Time is an entrepreneur’s most valuable resource—Homebase is giving that back to small businesses. Small business owners have nearly impossible jobs, every day is a race to beat their to-do list. Yet their needs, big and small, have been overlooked by the tech sector. Homebase simplifies scheduling, time clocks, and payroll in one app—giving local business owners back that most valuable commodity of time. Dive into the work of Homebase and hear from the small businesses they support in Emerson Collective’s Positive Sum magazine: https://lnkd.in/eCHUbFXE

Emerson Collective recently had the honor of hosting environmental advocate and leader of the Waorani Nation Nemonte Nenquimo and her husband and Amazon Frontlines leader Mitch Anderson to talk about their new book, We Will be Jaguars. Nemonte is a natural leader who has given her life to defending the Amazon rainforest. What I love about her book is that it is not only a story about Nemonte and her family, but it is also a powerful story of a movement. When the Ecuadorian government decided to auction off their ancestral lands to big oil without their consent, Nemonte created an organization called the Ceibo Alliance to unite women leaders from impacted Indigenous nations to build strategies and a plan to protect their territories and culture from destruction. What transpires is a heroic tale of Indigenous women leading a global movement against powerful multinational oil companies that resulted in the protection of 500,000 acres of land in the Amazon rainforest. This incredible book will inspire you with rich storytelling that shows you the power of people to create movements and will leave you with a sense of great optimism. 🚨Big Announcement: The First-Ever Planetary Health Check launched today at New York Climate Week! We’re excited to share the release of the first annual aggregate assessment of the state of our planet, known as the Planetary Health Check. This groundbreaking report evaluates Earth’s health by combining insights from all nine Planetary Boundary processes, marking a critical milestone in understanding our planet’s wellbeing🌱 🌿 Key findings: - Six out of nine Planetary Boundaries have already been breached. - A seventh boundary is at risk of imminent transgression. - Seven of the nine boundaries show trends moving deeper into the high-risk red zone. The findings are clear: planet Earth is far outside the safe operating space for humanity and is rapidly approaching a state of red alert, serving as an urgent call to action for governments, industries, and individuals worldwide to address these planetary challenges. Together, we must work towards a safer, more sustainable future for all. 🌍✨ Check the new website: https://lnkd.in/eUxVz7kn #BeaPlanetaryGuardian, #ClimateWeekNYC, #ItIsTime, #PlanetaryBoundaries

On the last day of the last month of Summer, the Fellows Forward newsletter from Emerson Collective is going outside. We visit Karen Washington at her farm, Rise & Root Farm, in upstate New York; survey the work and unique approach of the landscape architecture firm Studio Zewde; and consider, with the help of Tatewin Means and her community at Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation, a new way of thinking about land altogether. (A way that is actually very old.) Additional Shoutouts: Sophie Schwartz Rudi Navarra Keri Blakinger Megan Garber
