It was great to host a collaboration session this week with our Enabling Water Smart Communities project team. Our guest speaker was Peter Lacey, Project Manager for the The Duchy Of Cornwall.   Peter shared the latest on the Duchy of Cornwall's South East Faversham project, a planned mixed-use development integrating 2,500 new homes. It will promote sustainable living through smart energy systems, renewable technologies and a water recycling centre.   It was fascinating to hear about the progress they have made so far, and the challenges that they still face. Chair: Catherine Moncrieff, Head of Policy & Engagement, CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) Panelists included: George Warren, Integrated Water Manager, Anglian Water Services Water – Explored the role of water-smart communities in enhancing resilience and driving sustainable change. Kat Evans, Associate Director, ADAS & Jason Winslow, Technical Director, RSK Group Habitat Management – Highlighted the importance of peatland restoration for improving water quality and discussed best practices for successful implementation. Great to attend and present on Enabling Water Smart Communities at the Demand Knowledge Exchange Workshop organised by The Environment Agency and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Lots to share from the project and to learn from others. In summary; we don't have enough water, we should use it more efficiency, the public will support water re-use if we get the messaging right, and if we don't there will be negative economic consequences. It was great to attend #WaterwiseConference2025 last week! Session 4 of the Waterwise Conference, titled 'Innovation: Water and re-use', was chaired by Niki Roach, former CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) President and #PlanetPossible host, and featured some great presentations on community-scale innovations in rainwater harvesting and water reuse. That’s a wrap on our final session of the #WaterwiseConference2025! We closed the conference with a deep dive into community-scale innovations in rainwater harvesting and water reuse. From policy and education to practical implementation, today’s discussions showcased how we can make sustainable water use the norm. Our speakers included: Liz Sharp, Sarah Bunney, Matt Hull, George Warren, Ella Foggitt, Stuart Edwards, Johannes Melin, Lutz Johnen, Saad Qazi. It's great to see Public First's excellent research -  'A Case for Water Smart Housing' (commissioned by CIWEM for the Enabling Water Smart Communities project) featured in The i Paper this weekend! This research makes the economic case for building water efficient homes, including water recycling, to meet government housing targets. The first new reservoirs in England since 1992 are due to open in 2031. But, as Alastair Chisholm, policy director at CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) says: “The new reservoirs will only supply a small proportion of what’s needed. Government urgently needs to get behind water saving measures if we’re to avoid the prospect of stalled housing, supply interruptions, or our precious natural environment being the fall guy as it so often is. “These measures need regulatory updates to bring them forward and updates to building regulations to require the more efficient of these in new homes.” Read the report in full: https://lnkd.in/e_h4ZCyP #EWSC #enablingwatersmartcommunities #WaterScarcity
