The VIRGINIA LOGGERS ASSOCIATION INC’s (VLA) 22nd Annual Conference attracted over 250 forestry professionals to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. The annual event celebrates achievements made over the past year by VLA members and others in addition to providing an excellent learning and network experience for all attendees. Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Matthew Lohr kicked off the Saturday morning session by highlighting some challenges and success his department navigated over the past year. Secretary Lohr complimented VLA members for their commitment to their craft, noting compliance with Best Management Practices and Water Quality Protection was once again over 96 percent. The focus of the Saturday session meeting was exploring how biomass energy can fulfill its role within Virginia’s renewable energy portfolio through different panel discussions based on policy and operations. As Virginia continues to attract new business and residents, the challenge of providing enough power for the Commonwealth is mounting. Enviva’s Chris Brown participated on a panel focused on operations that consisting of Scott Dane of the American Loggers Council, Don Bright of Meherrin River Forest Products, Vance Wright of Charles A. Wright Logging.    The highlight of each VLA meeting is its auction for Log A Load For Kids, which is the chosen charity for loggers across the United States. VLA members once again showed that their generosity is one of the few things that can match their work ethic!    Congratulations to Ron Jenkins, VLA’s Executive Director, and his wife, Nanette, and their volunteer crew for creating such a friendly, family environment for everyone in attendance.  #EnvivaProud

Enviva was one of the many exhibitors to recently spend time with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, agriculture and math) students across the region at the Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project (SFLRP) one-day Youth STEAM Summit in Rocky Mount, NC. The event, which drew over 100 students ranging from the 9th  – 12th grade, was designed to allow students to learn more about agriculture and forestry professions by directly interacting with professionals within the forest products and renewable energy communities, and by partaking in various conservation activities. There were several exhibitors from area colleges and universities sharing information on resources available in higher education. Established in 2013, the SFLRP is under the direction of Alton Perry. The program seeks to help families in Roanoke Cooperative’s service territory maximize the value of family-owned farms and forests by sharing best practices and resource information. The project is directed through the Roanoke Cooperative Alliance, which is a nonprofit subsidiary of Roanoke Cooperative. Enviva’s Director of Conservation and Strategic Partnerships Thomas Jackson and Senior Community Relations Manager Chris Brown enjoyed the opportunity to share Enviva’s story with students while learning more about what is motivating these students to pursue particular careers with the STEAM community. #EnvivaProud

Wonder where you can find the Enviva team on the first Saturday in August? At the Epes Day celebration in Sumter County, Alabama! This past weekend, Enviva’s Community Relations Manager Rick Frederick and Human Resource Manager Ashley Fedrick joined Epes Mayor Walter Porter and the rest of the Epes community for a day of fellowship and family fun at the 2024 Epes Day to celebrate the end of Summer and the start of the new school year. Enviva has been a proud supporter of the annual festivity over the last five years, in which it has donated towards the Epes Alabama Stuff the Bus with School Supplies and provided a giant water slide for the younger attendees to have a great time beating the heat. Among the highlights for Enviva representatives was the very exciting announcement that our Epes facility will start hiring in September 2024 for over 100 positions! If interested, please apply online at envivabiomass.com/careers and search by location. #EnvivaProud

New blog from Andrew Georgiou: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐄𝐔 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧’𝐬 (𝐛𝐢𝐨) 𝐢𝐧-𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐲? The European elections have now concluded and with the mood of Europe’s voters now gauged attention turns to the new Commission. Last week leaders of the 27 member states nominated President von der Leyen for a second term. She will face a confirmation vote in the Parliament later this month, followed swiftly by the appointment and confirmation of her Commissioners. It is at this point in the cycle that the centre piece for the EU’s next five years is set. In 2019, it was the Green Deal, in 2014 the Juncker Plan for investment and before that the Euro 2020 plan. What will it be this time? This is principally shaped by the European Council (member states), inherited priorities from the last Commission and the European Parliament. This week we commemorate #NationalForestWeek, a yearly celebration that takes place during the second week of July, honoring the majestic 193 million acres of U.S. National Forests and Grasslands that provide countless benefits to society and the environment. One of these precious forests is the DeSoto National Forest in Mississippi, that is actively managed and restored for longleaf pines. Learn more below about our collaboration with The Longleaf Alliance (TLA) in the DeSoto National Forest, where we planted thousands of seedlings and worked to replace, clean, repair and install new cavities to make an important difference in the Red-cockaded Woodpecker’s recovery, which is an endangered species that nests and lives in longleaf pine stands. Today, as we celebrate National Forest Week, we are thankful for our partners, like TLA, for guiding us and helping us steward public forests, and we are proud of our work supporting these very special habitats. Happy National Forest Week to all! Read on about this special collaboration with TLA here: https://lnkd.in/eJD54EXJ (Red-cockaded Woodpecker photo credit: Brady Beck)
