A special rail event to mark the 50th anniversary of Drax Power Station has raised over £30,000 for Martin House Children's Hospice, a charity that provides hospice care for children and young people with life-limiting illnesses across Yorkshire. 🛤️ 🤝 In partnership with DB Cargo, GB Railfreight, Freightliner Heavy Haul (Freightliner Group Ltd) and the Branch Line Society, the rail event saw three unique passenger train services operate on the Drax Power Station loop, which is usually restricted to freight trains for the transportation of sustainable biomass. 🌿 👥 Plus, the event included naming ceremonies, where two of the current class 66 locomotives which supply Drax Power Station were named Yorkshire Rose and Drax Power Station 50. 🚆 👉 Learn more in our latest press release: https://lnkd.in/ePcDst8Z

The #DraxFoundation has donated £300,000 to help combat UK fuel poverty. 💡 This new funding has been allocated to the Fuel Bank Foundation, National Energy Action (NEA) and ALIenergy (Argyll, Lomond and the Islands Energy Agency), three organisations that support those affected by household energy insecurity in our communities across the UK. 👥 🤝 Speaking about this new funding, our Head of Community, Shona King, said: “These grants build upon the Drax Foundation’s strong record in supporting the communities where we operate. The £300,000 in grants for NEA, ALIenergy and Fuel Bank Foundation will help to address the critical issue of fuel poverty within the communities where we operate by providing education for school students, financial support for those in need and provisions for those in isolated off-grid homes.” 💬 ➡️ Learn more in our latest press release: https://lnkd.in/eaAAAnyw

We’re pleased to share that all DB Cargo (UK) Limited trains that transport our sustainable biomass to Drax Power Station will be powered by environmentally friendly Hydro-treated Vegetable Oil (HVO). 🛤️ This is part of our efforts to reduce our supply chain emissions, helping to achieve our ambition of becoming carbon negative by 2030. 🌍 DB Cargo UK currently transports around 4.5 million tonnes of biomass pellets to Drax Power Station each year - it's estimated that switching from traditional red diesel to HVO will save over 12,000 tonnes of carbon each year, equivalent to 30 million miles worth of car journeys. 🌿 🚗 👉 Read more in our latest press release: https://lnkd.in/eXNmgBqZ

⚡ Increased levels of intermittent renewables, coupled with price volatility over the past 5 years means Cruachan Power Station continues to have have an important role to play in the UK's generation portfolio. 📈 In recent years increased generation, storage and time operating have all helped increase demand. 🛠️ Our plans to expand Cruachan's existing operations and create a new-build pumped storage site will see this capacity increase to 1.1GW by 2030. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eed66Jbb

💡 This year, Drax Power Station is celebrating half a century of bringing power to millions of homes across the UK. Speaking about the milestone, our Plant Director, Bruce Heppenstall, said: ‘As we come into our half century, we look back with pride at what’s been achieved. But we also look forward to what our legacy will be.’ 💬 Having transitioned from coal to sustainable biomass, contributing millions to the local economy and supporting thousands of jobs, we’re now looking to the future. ⚡ We have plans to develop bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (#BECCS) at Drax with a target to capture and permanently store eight million tonnes of carbon per year - equivalent to cancelling all annual flight departures from Heathrow. 🌍 ✈️ 👉 Read more in this new Yorkshire Post article: https://lnkd.in/eF7-fEje
