  • Wind droughts show the need for low-carbon flexible generation - analysis by academics at Imperial College London for Drax #ElectricInsights outlines the following key factors ⬇️ ⚡ Although wind power was the largest source of electricity in 2024, it fell to just 6% of electricity supply in mid-December due to a ‘Dunkelflaute’ - a period of dark, cold and calm weather. 🌍 In response, Britain had to rely heavily on natural gas, which causes key risks relating to high costs, energy security and carbon emissions. 🌿 So, how should Britain deal with future Dunkelflaute periods? We need low-carbon, flexible generation options, such as #biomass and #BECCS, which can fill the gap when the wind isn’t blowing and the sun isn’t shining. Read more via the link in comments. 👇

  • 📢 It was Scottish Apprenticeship Week last week, and our Early Careers team celebrated by visiting some of our external education partners and attending some fantastic events! 🌟 We delivered a virtual session to students across Dumfries and Galloway schools, covering everything you need to know about Scottish Apprenticeships at Drax. The session was recorded and shared with schools across the region! 🌟 Drax Technical Apprentice, Owen Moran, joined a virtual panel event hosted by Skills Development Scotland and Developing the Young Workforce. Owen joined a panel of other apprentices sharing experiences with students that are interested in Apprenticeships. 🌟 Early Careers ended the week with our Scottish Community Manager, delivering our 'Apprenticeships at Drax' presentation to a class of Engineering Foundation Apprenticeship and Physic Students. A full and rewarding week, showcasing Drax opportunities and educating students on all things Apprenticeships!
