🌱 Great first step for biosolutions in 2025: Commission launches a new Biotech and Biomanufacturing Hub Yesterday, the hub was officially launched by the European Commission with a specific goal in mind: to support companies, particularly SMEs, in bringing innovative biotechnology products to the European market. ⚙️ Today, the path from innovation to market is gruesome, confusing and for many SMEs, borderline impossible. Yet, as the Commission points out, biotechnology is still one of the fastest growing innovative industries in the EU with a strong ability bring sustainability ♻️, resilience 💪 and competitiveness to the European continent 📈. We certainly know this to be true regarding biosolutions. 📜 In 2024, the Commission announced a strategy to boost biotechnology and biomanufacturing in Europe, and this is an important next step. Bringing clarification and support to the biosolutions sector is much needed in a sector currently characterized by red tape and regulatory complexity. 💡 “Biotechnology is a key driver of industrial innovation, competitiveness and productivity, while using fewer resources, producing less emissions and generating less waste. The EU is set to create an optimal environment to support its scale-up, ensuring this critical sector thrives for the benefit of our citizens and industries alike. The Hub is a practical tool that will support this” said Stéphane Séjourne, the EVP for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy. 🎉 We welcome the Biotech and Biomanufacturing Hub as the first, tangible step in advancing biosolutions, that will be crucial for Europe’s future. The EU is now actively beginning to build a platform for biosolutions as a key driver of our sustaianbility, resilience and competitiveness.

🌟 THE NORTH STAR OF THE NEW COMMISSION ✨ In her speech at the World Economic Forum 🌍, President von der Leyen pointed out that the world’s major economies are currently vying for new opportunities as the world is changing. The rising tide of global trade is no longer a reliable driver of growth on its own. She put it bluntly: Europe must shift gears ⚙️ With these trying times, von der Leyen and the Commission is set to announce its proposal for the new EU Competitiveness Compass on the 29th of January to guide Europe’s competitive and economic future. This includes great initiatives: cut red tape ✂️, reduce the innovation gap and increase the efficiency of the capital and investment market 💶 Importantly, the President focused on creating a conducive environment to scale up European businesses’, and specifically SMEs, capacity to build, to produce and innovate in Europe. As von der Leyen stated: “Continental scale is our greatest asset in a world of giants” 🌐🚀 If the new EU Competitiveness Compass is implemented effectively, it could become a game-changer for Europe's biosolutions sector. Addressing these issues can create a favorable environment for SMEs and European businesses, which will, in turn, unlock the transformative potential of biosolutions to tackle climate challenges, boost resilience, and drive sustainable growth ♻️ These issues are all well-known within the biosolutions sector, and if we do manage to solve them, we can greatly strengthen Europe’s sustainability, resilience and competitiveness. Therefore, we welcome the adoption of this new North Star as a guiding principle for Europe’s competitive future 💫

🌱 It all starts with biosolutions 🌍 Well, at least 2025 did. We are happy to share some great news: 📜 Alongside 19 other industry associations and organisations, we co-signed a letter to President von der Leyen’s cabinet, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a cross-sectoral scope for the Biotech Act. 💬 The response was encouraging. While we feared a narrow, pharmaceutical-only oriented Biotech Act, we were reassured that the Commission’s commitment, as was outlined in their Political Guidelines, still seeks to fully embrace the entire biotech revolution. We need a bold European Biotech Act in 2025. 🔬 They acknowledge what the biosolutions sector have known for long: biotechnologies can help modernise the European economy in a wide variety of areas. 💡 For that to happen, and for us to fully unleash the potential of biotech and biomanufacturing in Europe, we need to create conditions that stimulate biosolutions in Europe. They simply are that important. That’s why we’re glad to see the Commission reaffirm their stance in support of a cross-sectoral Biotech Act. ✅ 📆 With many initiatives ahead, and among them most notably the Biotech Act, we now have further reason to hope that biosolutions in Europe will thrive. 💪 In the meantime, we’ll keep saying it louder: we need a bold Biotech Act!

Why shouldn’t 2025 be the year of biosolutions? 🌍🤔 We know by now that 2025 will be a crucial time for biosolutions, and in fact, at the Coalition, we believe that 2025 can be the year of biosolutions. Let’s take a look at what the year has in store. While you can be sure that we’re bringing you much more information shortly, we’re already looking forward to our European High-Level Conference on Biosolutions on the 13th of May. 📅✨ Our preparations are well underway, and we can’t wait to show you everything we’ve got going on. It’ll be the biosolutions event of the calendar year! 🌱 In the meantime, the sector is facing important developments. With the new Commission in place, 2025 will also be the year the European Biotech Act will be presented. 📜 This was first promised in President von der Leyen’s Political Guidelines last year, where the Commission committed themselves to make the most of the biotech revolution. And bringing biosolutions faster to the European market will be crucial to using the full potential this revolution has to offer. 🚀 Implementing a bold Biotech Act is of utmost importance, but it doesn’t stand alone. The Commission is currently revising the Bioeconomy Strategy and conducting studies that will support the broader biotech sector, including bio-based products and biosolutions. Overall, 2025 can be an absolutely crucial year for advancing biosolutions and their unfathomably large potential. But there is still much left to achieve. So, for 2025, we remain hopeful that biosolutions can be advanced in Europe. Yet we also recommit ourselves to our efforts, as the work is far from done. Let’s make 2025 the year of biosolutions! 🤝🌿
