Financial support for families facing cancer

About us

Treatment requires more than medicine — families need a roof over their heads and food on their tables to survive. If a family can’t meet these basic needs, cancer treatment takes a back seat. Family Reach is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works with patients, providers, and community organizations to challenge the systems that force families to choose between their health and their home. Together, we’re making financial treatment a standard of cancer care.

"Where does someone work after they had a bone-marrow transplant and they have a brand new immune system?" ➡️ Thousands of people ask themselves questions like this as they juggle their career and cancer — The Wall Street Journal shared a few of their stories. ➡️ Every minute focused on financial stress is a minute not focused on healing. Until policies and systems shift, nonprofits will play the critical role of filling in the gaps.

As people assess property damages, navigate through flooded streets, and wait for their power to be restored, the barriers to accessing cancer care are greater than ever. 💜💚 We have to show up for the people behind the diagnosis, especially in times like these. Thank you ASCO for sharing these resources!

We often say that cancer treatment requires more than medicine — a phrase that was beautifully reflected at this year's American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Quality Care Symposium. #ASCOQLTY24 💡 Patient experiences were in the spotlight, sparking discussions on financial toxicity, health related social needs, and the importance of resource navigation. 💡 Our very own Andrea Incudine, MPH, Senior Director of Operations and Data, unveiled our latest findings on metastatic colorectal cancer's impact on quality of life, in partnership with Takeda, BLKHLTH, Colontown, and Colorectal Cancer Alliance. 💡 Andrea also shared our research on solutions for addressing food shortages in collaboration with Dr. Evan Graboyes, Assistant Professor at Medical University of South Carolina, and Alejandro Marrero-Gonzalez, Clinical Research Fellow of Otolaryngology at Medical University of South Carolina and one of this year's winners of the Conquer Cancer Award! 🥗 Healthcare teams often recommend special diets for people facing cancer, yet many don't have room in the budget. 💬 "I can't afford to buy my normal monthly food with my food stamps and purchase 90 protein shakes like my doctor recommended," shared Michael, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. 💡 As we work toward a future where cancer is no longer linked to financial hardships like #foodinsecurity , emerging solutions like in-house food pantries are stepping up address the gaps. Life doesn't stop when cancer enters a home. Families are faced with an impossible balancing act for their time, attention, and money — treatment, work, bills, childcare, and other everyday needs. 🎙️ Listen to Family Reach CEO, Carla Tardif, share a first-hand example of why the "intersection of seeing patients as people in the healthcare system is so important."

In 2023, funds from the American Cancer Society enabled Family Reach to help 133 people enrolled in a clinical trial afford food, housing, and transportation. This support was life-changing for our families: “17-year-old Ashley and her mom drive an hour each way for their trial in hopes of prolonging and maintaining her quality of life,” shared one oncology social worker. “Ashley’s dad was her biggest supporter, but sadly died from his own cancer diagnosis three weeks ago. He was the main breadwinner…Mom, who is a teacher, is trying her best to not lose their humble home and make sure Ashley can continue to receive treatment. They will use the funds for rent, gas traveling to our hospital, and food.” Transportation is the #1 challenge for our families, but housing and food insecurity aren’t far behind. More than half of the people supported through our partnership with the American Cancer Society faced food insecurity, and over one-third of our funds went towards groceries for patients. Thank you, American Cancer Society, for helping us address this need for people with cancer. Learn more about our efforts to improve clinical trial access and adherence at https://lnkd.in/e6aHavvg.

Recently we worked with Family Reach to create a #cancer clinical trials access fund. Not surprisingly, the funds went quickly. We were proud to see hundreds of patients access life-changing clinical trials because we solved a health-related social need challenge they were facing. But surprisingly, after transportation, the second-leading barrier we solved through the clinical trials access fund was food insecurity. On the surface, it makes sense. When people don't have the basics, clinical trials are a "nice to have". On a deeper sense, food insecurity is part of a complex constellation of HRSN's that people face and rarely present without lodging and transportation barriers in tow. While the American Cancer Society has made decades-long investments in reducing lodging and transportation barriers, supporting better nutrition (for cancer prevention) and reducing food insecurity (to assist with accessing care) are on our radar. We're seeking partnerships and collaborators to help us be a force for good in the Food is Medicine space. To start our work, we partnered with Daniel Thomas - a DC-based chef who has served five Presidents and countless celebrities, to help guide the initial phases of our work. Pictured are he and I making a kale soup, honey brussels sprouts, and pan-seared salmon - all with unprocessed ingredients (which are associated with cancer risk).

Parents of a child with cancer face impossible decisions — do they stay by their child's side through treatment or go to work to cover everyday bills? According to Dr. Kira Bona, children with cancer from low-income households are 3x more likely to die and 2x more likely to relapse than their counterparts. With 28 years of eliminating barriers to cancer care and enhancing survival rates, Family Reach stands at the forefront of addressing this national crisis. Our commitment is unwavering, but the journey is far from over. By uniting our resources, expertise, and compassion, we can transform challenges into opportunities for hope and healing. #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth
