Wrapping up Fred Hutch's Science Education Partnership Summer Session with poster presentations and an open house! For the past three weeks, high school teachers from across Washington State have been at our Seattle campus learning molecular biology skills with colleagues, working alongside scientist-mentors in their labs and developing a curriculum project to share their experiences with their students. After completing the Summer Session, teachers have access to SEP's Kit Loan Program, including complete lesson plans and all the biotechnology equipment, reagents and supplies needed to turn their classrooms into labs. Technical and scientific support is also readily available from program staff and scientists at the Hutch. 🍏🔬 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gWeuu3v4

They are genes commonly associated with breast cancer in women, but in fact men who carry certain mutations in their BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are at higher risk of developing certain types of cancer themselves. These risks for men traditionally have been under-recognized, but newly developed national screening guidelines offer hope for identifying the cancer risk of BRCA mutations in men through genetic testing and tailored cancer screening, according to an article published today from Fred Hutch Cancer Center and University of Washington scientists in the journal JAMA Oncology. To make sure that doesn’t change, Prophet-Williams said it’s also important to reach out to young people in middle school and high school to introduce them to Fred Hutch and the field of nursing as a potential career. "Cellular immunotherapy treatments, especially CAR T cells, are effective and have improved the clinical outcomes significantly but there is still room for improvement," said Mazyar Shadman, MD, MPH, new medical director of the Bezos Family Immunotherapy Clinic at Fred Hutch. "One of the challenges we have in the field is to get CAR T cells to patients who need it and do it fast. We continue to work to make that possible for our patients, and we are expanding significantly in our capacity to do this." In this Q&A, Shadman discusses his vision for the future of immunotherapy at Fred Hutch: https://lnkd.in/gy5Zbs2d

Why have a presence in Uganda? With expertise in both #cancer and #infectiousdisease, Fred Hutch is uniquely positioned to develop high-impact, low-cost diagnostic tools and therapies that can be used in low-resource settings worldwide. "And at the same time, not only are we able to be able to do the research, we're able to train physicians and nurses and research staff to really build those capabilities up in places such as Uganda," said Andrea Towlerton, Laboratory Director of the Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute in Kampala. Towlerton sat down to discuss her path through a decade-long career at Fred Hutch with a nod to those who helped her along the way: https://lnkd.in/gjncyGvh #HeartoftheHutch #GlobalHealth
