Picture It: *Skills Labs in West Africa Set to Transform Health Worker Training* In West Africa, the training of nurses & midwives faces numerous challenges. The lack of educational materials is one of the most pressing. Students often struggle to acquire essential practical skills before they work with real patients. See how new skills labs provided by the Classroom to Care (C2C) project, funded by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, provide a hands-on learning environment where students can develop and refine their clinical skills. https://lnkd.in/gMhEFpbr Statistics underscore the urgent need to improve training & infrastructure for nurses & midwives. In Mali, for example, the neonatal mortality rate is 334 per 10,000 live births, partly due to inadequate training and a lack of health professionals in rural areas. The skills labs make it possible for teachers at health training schools to simulate a variety of clinical situations, from childbirth to neonatal emergencies. So far, C2C has set up skills labs in 9 schools across Mali, Niger, and Senegal, laying the foundation for a workforce that is more resilient and ready to meet maternal and newborn health challenges. #ICYMI, want to relive or quote it, you can watch our #UNGA79 event, Building Health Workforce Resilience: Preparing for Tomorrow’s Climate & Health Crises: https://lnkd.in/gN4fQRY5 "We live in a time of multiple crises," says Frontline Health Workers Coalition Director Tina Flores. "#HealthWorkers are on the front lines addressing epidemics, health consequences of #ClimateChange & conflict, all while providing routine health services. They're stretched to the limit." The World Health Organization has warned us we're facing a shortage of 10 MILLION health workers by 2030. Global and country leaders, donors, implementers, and advocates must ensure health workers are trained, retained, and protected, with decent employment & adequate compensation. “Greater commitments from all sectors are needed to realize a resilient health workforce," Flores says. "Funding is critical, as well as technical assistance and actionable polices.” She then announced the Coalition's partnership with Seed Global Health on the year-long #HealthWorkersSaveLives advocacy campaign, focused on how investments in health workers can provide better health outcomes for all. Thanks for helping us spotlight health workers at #UNGA79, while world leaders convened in New York. Our advocacy event with Frontline Health Workers Coalition was a success—550+ people registered to discuss the critical importance of health workers for responding to #ClimateChange, conflicts, other crises. *Key takeaways from four opening speakers* “Climate change & health is not a new idea," said Vanessa Kerry, MD MSc, Co-Founder & CEO of Seed Global Health & Special Envoy Climate Change & Health for World Health Organization, who raises awareness of the links between climate change and health. "It’s accelerating existing problems we’ve failed to solve. And one of those is that we have undervalued, underinvested in, and under supported health workers.” (Photo 1) -- Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng, Minister of Health, #SouthSudan, said health workers in her country are already experiencing the realities of climate change. "About seven million people are on the verge of starvation. Malnutrition, water-borne diseases, cholera and malaria outbreaks are more frequent and also heavier on fragile health system," she said. She asked those gathered at UNGA to invest in health workforce development, particularly in training, recruitment, and retention of health workers in vulnerable climate regions. "Health care workers are the lifeline of our health care system. They cannot succeed without support of the global community." (Photo 2) -- Hon. Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, Minister of Health, #BurkinaFaso, shared how his country is prioritizing health and health workers. "Despite the security & humanitarian situation, the government is right now spending 12% of its budget on health." He emphasized the country is investing in #CommunityHealth. “The country right now has 32,000 community health workers that have been recruited, trained, and motivated with the support of technical & financial partners." (Photo 3) -- Loyce Pace, Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Services, highlighted tangible needs for health workers domestically and globally. “We’re still dealing with a really critical #MentalHealth crisis amongst our health workers. There are great risks our health workers face around the world that they shouldn't in the wake of these conflicts and other crises. The health workforce, majority of whom are women, often face sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment." (Photo 4) -- Their remarks set the stage for a lively panel discussion & fireside chat. Thanks to all speakers for their thoughtful contributions. Stay tuned for a more detailed recap of this event in the coming days. Did you attend our event? What stood out to you? Picture It: Snapshots of strengthening health workforce leadership in Kenya! IntraHealth’s Kenya team recently hosted the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET)'s Programs Manager Mathilde Wagen and Kenya Grants Manager Grace Rukwaro, at our Kenya office at a meeting that brought together teams from IntraHealth, Primary Care International UK, and Strathmore University Business School. We checked in on the progress and achievements of our 12-month Global Health Workforce Program grant. This project is dedicated to improving the delivery of primary health care services in Kenya by strengthening the leadership capacity of the country's health workforce, while integrating gender equality and social inclusion. The THET team also attended a graduation ceremony for educators who completed a five-day clinical leadership training program in Nairobi (picture 2). The event celebrated the participants' achievements and efforts throughout the program, which covered modules such as patient-centered leadership, professional leadership, health systems leadership, and health policy leadership. Special thanks to the UK International Development Department of Health and Social Care, and to all our partners for their support and dedication. #GlobalHealth #Partnership #Leadership #GESI #HealthWorkforce #strathmorebusinesschool #PrimaryCareInternational #MOH #PHC #CoG #THET #UKAID #Kenya #LMG Thanks to Janet Muriuki and Carol Maore for these photos!

Very excited two African ministers of health will provide keynote remarks at our #UNGA79 advocacy event on Tuesday: Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng, Minister of Health of South Sudan & Hon. Dr. Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, Minister of Health of Burkina Faso! IntraHealth is proud to partner with both ministries of health on strengthening the health workforce to increase access to essential services and respond to crises. In South Sudan we work with the government to advance HIV epidemic control, including working directly with the Ministry of Health to strengthen the skills of health workers to provide comprehensive HIV/AIDS services through the continuum of HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and viral suppression services. In Burkina Faso we collaborate closely with Ministry of Health officials and others to integrate family planning; maternal, newborn, and child health; and nutrition services at the community level. Together we train nurses and midwives on integrated approaches and support community health workers to provide information and referrals. Don't miss their talks! You can still register to tune in virtually (we're over capacity for in-person attendance). Register and see the full speaker line up here: https://lnkd.in/eWzswBkv We're excited to collaborate on this event with the Frontline Health Workers Coalition and other members. Hope to see you there! #BurkinaFaso #SouthSudan #HealthWorkers
