Tackling our planet’s most pressing environmental problems.
About us
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) is the largest multilateral trust fund focused on enabling developing countries to invest in nature, and supports the implementation of major international environmental conventions including on biodiversity, climate change, chemicals, and desertification. The GEF was established on eve of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, to help tackle our planet’s most pressing environmental problems. Since then, the GEF has provided over $114 billion in grants and mobilized in excess of $70 billion in additional financing for more than 4,000 projects. The GEF has become an international partnership of 184 countries, international institutions, civil society organizations, and private sector to address global environmental issues.

A raptor species making a comeback, climate resilience at a national park and communities thriving through conservation: These attractions lured CEPF donors to visit #biodiversity and sustainable development projects in the Dominican Republic recently. They joined CEPF staff and members of the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI)—CEPF’s regional implementation team (RIT)—to see what CEPF grantees are achieving through the US$11.8 million investment in the Caribbean Islands Biodiversity Hotspot. The investment, which started in 2021 and continues through 2027, is financed through the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund – Caribbean Hotspot Project of The World Bank, using funds provided by Japan - The Government of Japan. Representatives from the Global Environment Facility, Agence Française de Développement, Conservation International, and the European Commission were in attendance.
