Bold. Grand. Inspired.
About us
Grand St. Settlement connects New Yorkers with opportunities that inspire, services that keep families strong and programs that bring communities closer. We've been inviting New Yorkers to join us in building the communities we need for a century; when we opened our doors in 1916 we served the Lower East Side, but today we connect more than 10,000 New Yorkers on both sides of the Williamsburg Bridge, including Williamsburg, Bushwick, East New York, Brownsville, and Bed-Stuy. Our Community Centers, partner schools and Child & Family Centers are vibrant, safe, and inclusive, creating a home away from home that reflects the cultures and wisdom of the communities' diverse experiences.

We gathered for our annual Executive+ Team retreat at the beautiful New York Foundation offices. Our time together focused on the importance of Grand Street’s culture of learning and inclusivity, the opportunities before us with our current strategic plan, and the lessons we can learn from our shared and individual histories with the organization. We even enjoyed a surprise reading of Grand Street’s new children’s book (coming soon!) from our resident former school teacher CEO Robert Cordero. Thank you to NYF President Rickke Mananzala for hosting us and spending sharing the ways our agencies have collaborated dating all the way back to 1956. We’re energized and inspired to take Grand Street to new heights in the Lower East Side, Brooklyn, and the Bronx!

Our Chief Social Services Influencer Robert Cordero was recognized by City & State as one of 50 exemplary leaders dedicated to serving New Yorkers. Robert stood alongside other forces for good like longtime friend Ronald Rosado Abad of Community Housing Innovations, Inc., colleagues from the United Neighborhood Houses network including Rigaud Noel of New Settlement, Christopher Hanway of Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement, Raye Barbieri of Kingsbridge Heights Community Center. The highlight of the event was receiving support from the Grand St. Settlement community from Board President Bryan Koplin to our financial team at BTQ Financial to community partner Tareake Dorill of Dorill Initiative Inc and many more. We also want to thank NYS Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance Commissioner Barbara Guinn for taking time to connect with us about opportunities to further serve our community. Congratulations Robert, we're proud of the work you do to further our mission and support New York families!

A note from Board President Bryan Koplin: Congratulations to CEO Robert Cordero for being listed as one of the 50 most influential social services leaders in New York! Robert started his career as a public school teacher before getting his Masters in Social Work from the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice. He has invigorated our 100+ year old organization during his tenure at Grand Street and we're proud to see him receive this deserved recognition. His landmark accomplishments in just under a decade include a major expansion and enhancement of programs, quadrupling our operating budget in order to support thousands more New Yorkers every year, leading Grand Street to become the largest Youth Cornerstone provider in New York City, and a landmark expansion of Head Start programs into Brooklyn and now the Bronx. Robert is a staunch advocate for many causes that impact our community including fair wages for human services workers, high-quality universal child care, and the importance of STEM education for youth. Robert is truly a rock star leader and a hall of fame human. We're grateful for all you do to uplift our neighbors, our team, and all New Yorkers. Check out the list here: https://lnkd.in/e8xXGMMq

Today, campers from across Brooklyn and the Lower East Side came together to celebrate the last weeks of summer camp and share what they learned. Our theme this year was Space and each site chose a planet to study. Participants shared facts, choreographed dances, created videos, and showcased their creativity. Congratulations to the participants and our incredible youth team for another year of summer camp, Grand Street’s longest annual tradition dating back to 1907!
