GEO is a community of funders committed to transforming philanthropic culture and practice.
About us
The GEO community makes the difference between grantmaking as usual and transformational change. We’re more than 6,000 grantmakers working together to turn a hunger for more effective philanthropy into clear pathways for achieving it. We’re cutting through the noise to lift up the practices that matter most to nonprofits. The GEO community gives grantmakers the opportunity to work with others navigating the same journey to improve. With conferences focused on solving of-the-moment challenges, regular opportunities for peer learning, and publications that lift up best practice and examples from peers, GEO speeds grantmakers’ progress on the road to effectiveness. Four out of five GEO members outpace the field in adopting smarter grantmaking practices. To learn more about how GEO is making faster progress possible, visit www.geofunders.org.

In this moment of major chaos and uncertainty in the United States, one thing is abundantly clear: philanthropy can play a key role in supporting the stability, resilience, and reimagination of our social sector. ✨ GEO is proud to join Trust-Based Philanthropy Project, National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP) in announcing a coordinated call-to-action for philanthropy at this time of heightened urgency. Funders, we invite you to do everything within your power to move in solidarity with nonprofits, mobilize money, and nurture possibility. Review the call-to-action ⬇️, sign the commitment 📝, and join the growing community of funders taking courageous, trust-based action in support of our nonprofit partners – without whom our work would not be possible. https://lnkd.in/gWPDJE-5

Is your foundation using advocacy to drive change? Many funders hesitate, but advocacy is more than lobbying—it includes engaging policymakers, convening grantees, and funding grassroots efforts that shape policies for long-term impact. In our latest blog for Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO), Brendan Mccormick and I share real-world examples of lean funders leveraging advocacy to restore education funding, strengthen early childhood policy, and advance workers’ rights. 📖 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/e2dDTgP3 How is your foundation making its voice heard? #Philanthropy #Advocacy #Grantmaking

GEO is motivated by the findings from Project Evident's new report, "Funding the Future: Grantmaker Strategies in AI Investment." As fellow nonprofits consider ways to fund their investments in #AI to reduce burdens and increase efficiencies that result in better outcomes, the findings in this report are informative! The report provides insights about: -How grantmakers are thinking about funding AI for their grantees -How they evaluate proposals and what could increase your chances of being awarded a grant -An investment rubric highlights how funders evaluate AI proposals Access the full report (including the investment rubric): https://lnkd.in/eRxnztaA
