Our take: PR alone isn’t enough anymore - it's about coordinating an integrated strategy, from setting achievable goals, to clearly communicating the benefits your technology delivers, and ensuring your messaging across all channels maps back accordingly.
Last week, during NAB Show New York, I had a chance to “act like a client” when Larry Jordan welcomed me to his #EditSmarter hot seat to talk about the value of #PR. Naturally I started out with a contradiction: the value is in taking your strategy far beyond PR by taking a holistic approach to publicizing your business, as the lines between marketing, communications and public relations have blurred (and that’s probably an understatement!). Here’s a brief snippet of my conversation with Larry: On common mistakes companies make when engaging in PR, whether in-house or with an agency: Before jumping in, stop and take a step back to consider “What is the purpose?” We look at 5 key areas and determine how our activities can support the goals for each: • Brand recognition • Share of voice • Persuasion • Credibility • Brand positioning Set your KPIs ahead of time and track the results back to those. And for smaller companies – focus, focus, focus! Start with easily manageable PR/marketing goals, determine what you define as “success” (what moves the needle?), then expand from there. Sometimes, “focus” can mean holding off on PR until you’ve made significant headway in other areas that are foundational to the success of your PR and marketing efforts. On dealing with the current challenges of the media & entertainment industry: Diversify! Any company can be a media business these days, and that means there are many more opportunities out there to bring in revenue. This also means your marketing needs to be sharper than ever. Clearly communicate the benefits your technology delivers (efficiency, cost savings, etc.) throughout your messaging, and ensure that story is consistent across all marketing channels.
