Last week, our team was in Des Moines to kick off a new initiative that will expand access to high quality health care to schools, which will impact approx. 100,000 students across Iowa. This initiative is part of a $1.5M investment from UnitedHealthcare Community & State of Iowa to expand access to youth mental health services statewide. Hannah Stuelke, famed UIowa Basketball player, joined a roundtable discussion with Katie Issa, behavioral health coordinator at Des Moines Public Schools and led by Travis Gayles MD, PhD, Hazel's Chief Health Officer, to share the importance of investing in youth mental health services. 🎉 Big news out of Iowa! UnitedHealthcare Community & State invested $1.5M to expand pediatric behavioral health care access. Now, as over 20% of students across the state head back to class this fall, they will have access to Hazel Health's school-based telehealth services at no cost—a life-changing shift in Iowa's pediatric healthcare ecosystem. "Amid today's growing youth mental health crisis, schools can play a pivotal role in identifying unmet mental health needs among our children, connecting them to timely interventions before they reach a crisis point, and bridging their families to the broader health care ecosystem."—Josh Golomb, CEO, Hazel Health.
United for Change: A Collaborative Commitment to Youth Mental Health Mental Health Awareness Month is about moving from awareness to action this year. As leaders in youth behavioral health, we’re uniting in our shared commitment to taking action on youth mental health—not just one month a year—but 365 days a year. This year's Mental Health Action Day theme, 'Dedicate One Hour to Connection,' underscores a simple truth: feeling connected to, seen, and understood by a trusted adult is one of the most potent strategies for supporting youth mental health. Strong relationships are proven to improve youth well-being, and those same relationships enable early intervention, which is vital for mitigating the downstream impacts on unmet mental health needs. For youth and the caring adults in their ecosystem alike, it’s important to remember that it's normal to experience mental health challenges and okay to talk about the need for support in overcoming those challenges. So, take a moment to connect today. Check-in on a student, friend, or colleague. And check in with yourself. But, beyond the month and moment, remember this conversation about mental health going on all year long and remind each other that no one has to face their struggles alone. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of young people and create a brighter future for all. 💙 Backpack Healthcare, BeMe Health, Bend Health, Brightline, Cartwheel, Clarity Pediatrics, Daybreak Health, Equip, Little Otter

Approximately 12% of children in Houston do not have #health insurance. One-third of Houston ISD students identified needing #mentalhealth support or #medical care services. After a successful pilot, I am so happy to be a part of the expansion of telehealth services through Hazel Health to reach every student in HISD in their school, at home and in the Sunrise Centers. Our #students can’t do thier best in school when they don’t have their most basic needs met. Starting this Fall, we will be able to provide some support to our families so that our students have the best chance to be well and in school.
Houston ISD is putting all the cards on the table when it comes to transforming student outcomes. Starting in the upcoming 2024–2025 school year, every HISD student districtwide can access high-quality care through Hazel Health as part of a continuum of supports that creates opportunities for every student to thrive physically, emotionally, and academically. "HISD is reimagining what it means to meet students' needs in and out of the classroom," said Najah Callendar, senior executive director of external engagement for HISD. "Hazel Health's telemedicine services are one of the most exciting components of our Continuum of Care approach, and we're thrilled to make these supports available to every student in the district." We're proud to work alongside the district's innovative leaders as they reimagine how they support student success.
