Costs in the commercial health insurance market are rising at an unsustainable rate. Many industry leaders believe advancing commercial value-based payment arrangements with downside risk offers a path forward for creating a financially sustainable payment model while delivering high-quality, whole-person care. But although the need for a sustainable commercial payment model is more urgent than ever, progress has been slow. That’s why Health Evolution’s Roundtable on Commercial Risk-Based Contracting—a multi-stakeholder group primarily comprised of leaders from payer and provider organizations and sponsored by two technology organizations—set out to identify and share key learnings that define win-win arrangements in commercial risk-based contracting and design guidelines to build those contracts. At our 2024 Connect gathering, Roundtable Co-Chair Brian D. Pieninck, President & CEO, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and Roundtable Fellows Christine Donohue-Henry, MD MBA, Chief Population Health Officer, ChristianaCare, and Miles Snowden, MD, EVP of Physician Strategy, Navvis (healthcare), shared some of their key takeaways and perspectives from the effort. I'm still reflecting on the powerful conversations I had the privilege of moderating at #HealthEvolutionConnect last week. Our panel discussion on data-driven strategies for advancing #healthequity was a testament to the progress we've made as an industry, and the work that still lies ahead. I want to extend my gratitude to Health Evolution for the opportunity to be a part of this important conversation, and to our panelists, Rachel Thornton, MD, PhD, FAAP from Nemours and Tosan O. Boyo from Sutter Health, for sharing their insights and experiences. As we mark three years since the launch of the Health Equity Pledge - a bold cross-industry initiative to accelerate health equity - it's clear that our collective efforts are yielding results. But it's also clear that this work is a marathon, not a sprint. We must be patient, celebrate our small wins, and continue to push forward together. My two key takeaways from our discussion are: ✅Health equity work requires a long-term view. We must be willing to invest in this work and celebrate our progress along the way. ✅Achieving health equity is a collective effort. It's not a competition – it's a collaboration that requires us to work together as an industry. I'm proud to be part of this work, and I'm grateful to Health Evolution for their leadership in empowering positive change in health care.

Today, we wrapped up the final discussions of 2024 Connect. The day opened with a dynamic Fireside Chat, where Paul Kusserow of Amedisys and Sam Hazen of HCA Healthcare explored leadership development, the importance of organizational alignment, and AI’s potential to transform health care. They emphasized accountability and the need to stay focused on core strengths in the face of industry challenges. As we moved into our final session, we tackled a critical issue: making high-cost, high-value treatments more accessible and sustainable. The discussion centered on integrating innovative therapies with new care delivery and payment models, uncovering actionable solutions to balance cutting-edge treatments with financial sustainability. We leave Nashville inspired and energized. Today’s sessions sparked bold ideas and set the stage for authentic progress in health care. #HEConnect24
