September and October are always a time of new beginnings - for those in school, for those celebrating the Jewish New Year and for HIAS Pennsylvania as our new fiscal year begins. There is so much hope in that word, "beginnings" but as we approach our new beginnings this year, I have to admit that I do so with a very heavy heart. Violence and displacement continue to rise across the world and hatred, violence, and anti-human rhetoric abounds here at home. So as I prepare my annual message to wish sweetness and meaning for all of you in the coming year, it feels simultaneously not enough and too much to say in these times. So this year my message is to wish you more than sweetness and helpful reflection, it's an exhortation to not despair, to hold onto hope. Because hope is a motivator while despair results in inaction, apathy, and turning away. As we ring in the new year, we need to turn to one another, to act, to more than ever before re-commit to hope for each other. And what better way to do that than to welcome the stranger, for we were strangers too? May this season of reflection and renewal bring peace, strength, healing, and above all, hope. Shanah Tovah and G'mar Chatimah Tovah, Cathryn Miller-Wilson Executive Director _________________________________________ HIAS Pennsylvania's office will close at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 2nd, and will be closed all day on Thursday, October 3rd, and Friday, October 4th, in observance of Rosh Hashanah. Our office will be closed all day on Friday, October 11th, in observance of Yom Kippur.
