Each week we publish the On Our Radar newsletter which covers three summaries of events relevant to the energy industry that all run along a similar theme. This week, we are covering countries that have seen different sectors or areas of government moving in new directions: - Mexico’s President AMLO signed into law a sweeping judicial reform, cementing his legacy in his last few weeks in office, - The Indian government hosted the second international conference on green hydrogen, drawing a large domestic and international audience, and - Nigeria’s Dangote Group saw first gas from it’s refinery in Lagos State, but the road ahead may not be so smooth … This week’s Quote of the Week comes from former US President Donald Trump following the second public assassination attempt against him this summer.

We've put together a complimentary report on the central bank governors (CBGs) of five key energy jurisdictions to highlight their roles, relationships, and, crucially, their engagement value for energy investors. Below is a sample of the report on Angolan CBG Manuel Tiago Dias. If you would like to receive the full report on Dias, in addition to the CBGs of four other countries, like or comment on this post and we'll be in touch to send it over. #energy #resources #investment #energyinvestment #oil #gas

Great to see our Americas Director, Marcelo Garcia, being quoted in The Associated Press yesterday. In an article covering Argentinian President Javier Milei's presentation of the 2025 budget to Congress - and his promise to veto anything which compromised his economic policy - Marcelo warned: “The image of a half-empty chamber of deputies during the president’s speech is an indication that it will not be easy for the government to pass this budget. Again, Milei seems to be prioritizing confrontation over compromise." Our experts are regularly relied on by major media outlets for their trusted insights into key geopolitical developments. On Our Radar is Horizon Engage's weekly summary of three key events likely to have an impact on energy investments. This week, we're covering individuals and organizations with rising and falling influence: - In #Namibia, the energy minister's position looks shaky after ruling party Swapo selected its 96 candidates for the National Assembly, - In #Brazil, the Petroleum Workers' Union is looking to expand its influence under President Lula, and - And in #Turkey, a growing rift between the leaders of two of Turkey's political parties is threatening the government coalition. This week’s Quote of the Week comes from Nigeria’s foreign minister, who shared his perspective on foreign partnerships at the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Read more below!

So What? The difference between simply reporting news and providing insight is the “So What?” provided alongside a piece of information. A So What? is what elevates information from simply being interesting to something that is actually relevant to the reader - why should they care about what they are reading? Below is a snippet from a recent Horizon Engage Country Insight product which contains an example of a piece of information and its accompanying "So What?" for energy investors: Information: On 29 August, South Korea’s Constitutional Court declared part of the Carbon Neutrality Law unconstitutional, citing a lack of specific greenhouse gas reduction targets from 2031 to 2049. So What?: The verdict mandates the government must set clear, quantifiable targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions well beyond 2030. This should see more initiatives, subsidies, and tax incentives offered for sustainable energy solutions, including enhanced grants for research into carbon capture and storage. For more information on our Country Insights, and the "So What?"s they can provide you with, follow our LinkedIn page and visit our website at horizonengage.com. #energy #greenenergy #renewables #carboncapture

Horizon Engage's Andrew G. Farrand, Research Director for Middle East & North Africa, shares his persepctives on Algeria's election with The Guardian. "Owing to a windfall from energy deals signed as Europe sought substitutes for Russian gas, social spending has increased and fuel subsidy cuts have been deferred, said Andrew Farrand, the director for Middle East and north Africa (Mena) at the geopolitical risk consultancy Horizon Engage. “But he [Tebboune] struggled to rein in inflation and failed to meet his own export growth targets … [and] failed to leverage Algeria’s newfound popularity to advance key foreign policy priorities,” said Farrand, who is also a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council thinktank. Nevertheless, Tebboune is poised to win a second term in a country that has never had a peaceful transition of power. The predictability of the outcome is also in part because the president has deepened political patronage and established a strong rapport with the military. “Every national institution of consequence has been co-opted and pressed into service as an arm of [his] campaign,” Farrand added." https://lnkd.in/e4ASQRCQ #algeria #africa #oilandgas #elections

Horizon Engage's Andrew G. Farrand, MENA Research Director, spoke with The Associated Press about Algeria's election, providing perspective on the opposition candidates "long game" strategy. "Andrew Farrand, the Middle East and North Africa director at the geopolitical risk consultancy Horizon Engage, said both opposition candidates were more aimed at the 2025 legislative elections than the 2024 presidential contest. Because Algerian law funds political parties based on the number of seats they win in legislative elections, they hope campaigning will position them for a strong performance in 2025. “It’s a long game: How can I mobilize my base? How can I build up a campaign machine? And how can I get into the good graces of the authorities so that I can be in a position to increase my seats?” he said. “We’ve seen that in their choice not to overtly criticize president … paired with a very strong message to Algerians to come out and vote.” #algeria #elections #oilandgas #africa https://lnkd.in/eWUQyZ26

"If Tebboune and his fellow candidates manage to incite turnout beyond that of 2019, the president will enter his second term with the wind at his back." My outlook on Saturday's vote in #Algeria, from Atlantic Council:
