At idealis, we help companies understand their people better. But the way we do it is not traditional. The trainings, checklists and tools of yesterday have only gotten us so far - and there is room to go. In our newsletter this week, we explore how leaders can better understand the depths of our humanity at work and in the workplace. We draw upon the hit series, “The Bear” to showcase what happens when we look beyond what people do, and understand who people are. We hope it inspires you to go one level deeper in understanding yourself and those you work with. There is so much depth to who we are – shaped by our origin stories, the experiences we’ve had, and the aspirations we strive to achieve. We bring all of this into the workplace, yet we're rarely taught how to talk about it. Whether we lead, are led, or want to lead others, we have the opportunity to better understand one another at work and outside of work. This is one of the reasons why we’ve launched the Pulse of the U.S. Workforce, in partnership with Civic Science. The Pulse reports are based on daily responses from thousands of U.S. workers across geographies, sectors, and demographic groups - offering real-time data insights on evolving perspectives, attitudes, sentiments, and experiences of U.S. workers. Released in both a monthly and quarterly report format, the Pulse helps senior leaders who are striving to understand and lead their workforce with greater humanity. Because it’s worth the time and effort to understand each other a little bit better - at work, and in the world. To learn more about the Pulse of the U.S. Workforce, please e-mail pulse@idealisadvisory.com or visit our website at https://lnkd.in/e664E_73. #humanityatwork #humancenteredleadership #leadershipdevelopment #leadership #idealis #backtocenter #pulseoftheusworkforce #datainsights #workforceinsights

It is hard to make decisions without data, and in a world where there is so much data available to us, it can be tough to find a source that we can trust, with information we can make sense of, with insights that we can do something about. Listen to John Dick, CEO of CivicScience and Sumona De Graaf, CEO of idealis., describe their partnership in building the Pulse of the U.S. Workforce, where together, they are bringing more human perspective and information to decisions makers at work and in the world. We have seen so many companies conduct layoffs over the past few months, and the effects on the people, the culture and the company are felt far beyond the day the news is delivered. In our most recent newsletter, we share a perspective on letting people go with humanity. It is a dreaded part of a leader's job, and we think it's time to raise the bar on how we treat people when they work for a company and, when they are being let go. There is no guarantee to success or failure, but we can work the odds by making calculated choices and decisions - not only as we navigate our careers, but also as we navigate our lives in and outside of work. Our Dear Leader sidekick, Justin de Graaf, shared in this episode how “Using analytics adds to our humanity” - and how we can ensure we are taking into account who we are, what we want, and what we need in work and in life when contemplating a career opportunity. Justin de Graaf talks about how he decides on career opportunities -- it is never alone, and it is always calculated. When leaders and companies offer career opportunities to their employees, it helps to understand where their priorities are in work and life. This way the career decision fits into the broader context of one's life - and has a higher likelihood of working out well. We advise many leaders to not take personal offense when an employee declines a chance that is given to them, because there is usually a story behind the decision that warrants understanding. Leading with #humanityatwork enables conversations like this to happen.
