IDOM's project featured on the cover of ENR We are thrilled to announce that our work on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) enclosure has been highlighted on the cover of Engineering News-Record (ENR), a testament to our commitment to cutting-edge engineering solutions in the field of astronomical research. The GMT, once completed, will be one of the world’s most advanced ground-based telescopes, designed to provide unprecedented clarity in observing the universe. This recognition underscores the innovative engineering behind the telescope’s rotating enclosure, which is crucial for its operation in the challenging conditions of the Atacama desert. “This project is not only a remarkable engineering challenge but also an incredibly passionate journey for our team. The complexity of the GMT’s design pushes us to innovate continually, and we are proud to contribute to a project that will redefine our understanding of the cosmos.” says Nerea Castro, deputy project manager for the GMT enclosure design. “While there are large telescopes in seismically active regions such as Chile and Hawaii, use of seismic isolation on the structures is relatively uncommon. But as the telescopes get larger and more elaborate, it’s a concern”, says Tom Lorentz, president of North American operations for Spain-based IDOM. This has been one of the most interesting challenges as the seismic isolation system must provide the necessary stiffness for the telescope fine operation while providing isolation in case of seismic event avoiding harming any of the telescope’s hardware. This project reflects our dedication to advancing astronomical capabilities while adhering to the highest engineering standards. We look forward to the continued development of this groundbreaking facility, which is set to reshape our understanding of the cosmos. ENR article can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gJETpJdH
