“It’s unethical and immoral that the United States of America allowed people into a country for humanitarian purposes and is now turning their backs on them...It’s fundamentally wrong. This is not the way the rule of law should work,” IINE President and CEO Jeff Thielman told Boston Globe Media, as an internal memo reveals plans to allow deportations of immigrants legally allowed in the U.S. with humanitarian parole. Welcoming refugees and serving immigrants since 1918
About us
Mission The International Institute of New England (IINE) creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, career advancement and pathways to citizenship. History and Context Founded in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1918, IINE is one of the region’s largest and oldest service providers for new Americans. The International Institute serves 2,000 refugees and immigrants each year and has launched new programs to double the number of newcomers served to 4,000 within five years. In the past year, staff in our Boston, Lowell, and Manchester (NH) field offices provided resettlement, family reunification, education, career assistance, and legal services to people from 67 different countries. As the United States engages in a pitched debate about immigration policy, our work is critical to preserving the nation’s tradition of welcoming people of all backgrounds who cherish freedom, equality and hard work. IINE’s programs are particularly important to New England, which has a notable dependence on immigrant labor to grow its economy.

"More than 90,000 immigrants came into Massachusetts last year. Those folks represent the future of our commonwealth … Our whole economy benefits from them,” IINE President and CEO Jeff Thielman told Lowell Sun, regarding President Donald Trump’s unconstitutional executive order intending to end birthright citizenship, as it would put countless at risk of losing their status and benefits as American citizens, and possibly deportation. This executive order does not align with the United States' long-established values of equality and freedom. Learning from history 📜 From 2015 to today, IINE President and CEO Jeffrey Thielman has helmed the International Institute of New England during a decade marked by dramatic change, adaptation, and resilience. Reflecting on the last 100 years since the International Institute of Boston first opened its doors to support people from around the world, we are reminded of our nation’s history of welcome and protection of freedom for all, even in the face of staunch xenophobia. "It's so hard, especially for the Afghan supporters who are coming here,” IINE Managing Director at our Manchester office Henry Harris told WMUR-TV following President Donald Trump's executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program that has left many Afghan refugees awaiting flights in limbo. The executive order endangers those fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries, including Afghan refugees facing the threat of the Taliban. “This is a very sad time for families waiting for refugees to come, their family to come. And I think it’s a sad time for the country, because the people who come to the United States as refugees are carefully vetted and they deserve to be here,” IINE President and CEO Jeff Thielman told WBUR in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order suspending the refugee resettlement program. Thousands of refugees expecting to arrive in the U.S. to safety and their families were left devastated, including hundreds in Massachusetts. We must restore the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program and honor our nation’s commitments. Thank you Liberty Mutual Insurance Foundation for awarding us a Climate Resiliency Mini-Grant! The grant will support digitizing organizational documents and resources to reduce paper usage, and training for 150 new and current staff across IINE’s programs and service sites. The transition to digital documents and resources will ensure we can meet the needs of our clients with greater efficiency. We understand the critical need to support climate initiatives as many refugees and immigrants have been forced to leave their homes due to the impacts of climate change. We hope to support more initiatives like this in the future to reduce our own carbon footprint. 🌱 #climateresiliency #climatechange #digitalresources #climateefforts #greeninitiatives #climateinitiatives

On the first day of his second term, President Trump issued a series of executive orders on immigration that go well beyond addressing his stated crackdown on criminals and instead seek to dismantle the processes and policies by which most of our citizens’ families became Americans. The International Institute of New England condemns these cruel and illegal actions. We urge the restoration of our national commitments to the world community and to our own families and residents. “What people hear is, ‘Millions and millions of people are going to be deported,’...The general sense of rounding up people and cracking down on people who are here makes everybody feel afraid and is almost its own form of terror,” IINE SVP and Chief Advancement Officer Alexandra Weber, MSW, LICSW told MassLive.com following President Donald Trump’s promises to deport millions. Trump’s executive order to militarize our southern border and deploy ICE to conduct raids in sanctuary cities will only create more chaos and harm, instead of developing a safer, more effective immigration system. “I hope they [the Trump administration] will reconsider and they will look into the refugee program — and they will realize the refugee program is safe, the clients are vetted...People are fleeing persecution or war. They are coming to join family,” IINE Chief Program Officer Anca Moraru told GBH as President Donald Trump suspends the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. The program has helped millions of people fleeing humanitarian crises find safety in the U.S. since 1980 and is integral to our nation's standing as a global humanitarian leader. “We hope the president reinstates the refugee program as soon as possible...Otherwise, our nation will leave tens of thousands of refugees, who have already been approved to come to the US, stranded at camps across the world – continuing to live in fear,” IINE President and CEO Jeff Thielman told Boston Globe Media in the wake of President Donald Trump's sweeping executive orders, including one that has halted a refugee resettlement program that has helped millions of people find safety in our country since 1980.
